I really need some advice. We are looking at putting in an above ground pool. The best spot for us is under a bit leaf maple tree.

How dumb an idea is this?

DIRECTLY under a tree? Hummm... I don't think it's a good idea. Too much stuff falling on the water...

That is what we agreed upon. Take it away from as many trees as possible.

If you get a wallet set up let me know and I'll zap you some sats.

Question number 1 needs to be: how much time do you have available to maintain said pool? Question 2: how much time do you want to spend maintaining it? Question 3: can you afford to automate things to reduce the amount of time required to maintain the pool to a level you are willing to do and WILL do so that you can actually enjoy said pool?

Answer to question 2 is none! That should answer the rest as well

Then I think you’re making the correct choice by moving it out from under the tree. I’d still consider some kind of canopy or something though, it would only help keep the pool clean and shade is always nice

...because a LOT of leaves are going to end up in that pool. Plus, if they aren't timely removed, the water goes brown.

Thanks for the reply. It seems easy to maintain, but I know it is one of those things that will be a pain in the butt.

Is it feasible to build an awning over the pool? Would the cost of an awning outweigh the cost of modifying an area clear of tree cover? My father deals with eucalyptus tree dust. His pool has a decent cover, but he has to keep the cover on all the time unless he is swimming.

We decided to move the location more to the center of the years away from some of the trees.

You will just have to deal with the leaves. it can be done.

The bigger question is do you want to use chlorine, salt, or magnesium? do you want to kill the beneficial bacteria on your skin as you bathe in toxins, or do you want to nourish your body?

Usually we learn towards toxins and death. However, I am interested in other alternatives.

Don't know anything about salt and magnesium though.

Not sure it's available in Canada. I will look into further though. Thanks a lot.

We had an above ground pool growing up that my dad still maintains. Build a nice deck around it and lattice to grow vines up and it’ll look nice from window views.

As for leaves we put in some 8x8” posts and ran a wire across the length of the pool. Then rig up some shade cloth type materials to create an A to keep leaves out of the pool in fall.

That pool was the backbone of our birthday parties growing up (30+ years ago) and still going strong!

Thanks for the reply. We moved the location to an area with less leaf fall.

I hope we get a few good memories as well.

Lots of leaves but the shade would be nice.

Thanks. It is a tough decision apparently.
