Hey #nostr #devs. If this is to ever gain wider use by non-tech people, ya'll need to clean up this relay mess. You cannot for one second think a typical user is going to put up with all this nonsense of having to deal with app relays, dm relays, search relays, inbox relays, outbox relays and whatever other type of relay that must be set up. And it would help if the same relays showed up in ALL clients. People wonder why occasionally there is an uptick in users than a couple weeks later it drops off again. I guarantee this more than anything else is the reason why. And if it cannot be made for ease of use, nostr is going nowhere

Is there a way to automatically add relays each time you encounter a new one that someone is posting to? I know bittorrent magnet links work by using past information. Could nostr do something similar?
That just sounds like more hassle to me. Shouldnt have to keep adding anything, and from my experience, too many slows everything down. The point I am trying to make is for the vast majority of people, just the fact of having to do anything with picking relays at all, especially when there are multiple types to set up, is going to be a non-starter. For mass adoption, which I assume is what the goal is, the clients are gonna need to just work out the box. Not to say that it shouldnt offer the option to customize relay choices, but I've been on here for over a year and its just getting worse in this sense.
Amethyst has some default relays built in.
The problem is, this lends itself to capture by big relays. If everything is centralized on a few central relays, it's not much different from the problem with all other social media.
You're missing the point. I can figure this out. Its not about me. Its about a normal user who just wants an app to work. And its not just about Amethyst either. Its about all the apps and web clients. And I am not saying anything about centralizing anything. But if a new user cant make sense of it they will go elsewhere. Fediverse is decentralized, but nobody needs to configure what instances they interact with. It just works out the box.
Fediverse failed because big instances collaborated to create a walled garden that excluded anyone who didn't agree with their ideology.
Fediverse is fine. I use it all the time. With zero headaches whatsever whether mobile or web, and the experience is 100% identical either way.
I guess you haven't been part of an instance that went offline, or had to change instances for whatever reason. It is a major headache.
like I said, you are completely missing my point. And yes, I have twice had to switch instances and it takes all of 3 seconds to sign up for another and is no different than creating an account on anything online. Non-tech savvy people are never going to deal with this relay nonsense. Just because you understand it does not mean the vast majority of the world's population will. But who cares about that? Why would anyone wanna make something easy to use for regular users? Crazy talk, I know. This attitude of yours is all too prevalent here and is why nostr will NEVER see mass adoption.
I never disagreed that the relay thing is an issue, retard.
And no, it doesn't take 3 seconds to sign up somewhere, refollow all of the accounts you were following, communicate to all of your followers that this is your new account, etc.
I have definitely interacted with morons like you on fedi before, though.
You've been arguing with me about it for multiple days now. So fuck off.
