Why is it socially acceptable to say someone is “skinny” but not acceptable to say that someone is “fat”?

It is to the point that my 9-year-old thinks “fat” is a bad word 🤬

Many Asian cultures see calling someone fat a compliment. It means you have more than enough.

Of course there level of morbid obesity is also much less.

Because it's generally not nice to point out people's shortcomings and struggles. It's not that hard of a concept to understand. I wouldn't call somebody ugly or dumb either.

Wish I could grasp this concept

So the assumption is

skinny = attractive

fat = ugly

It is called common courtesy. One says chubby or something softer like that.

I find saying "do not eat that or you are gonna get fat" ok, but "there, next to the fat lady" not ok.

I think the same people would be very offended if you said “chubby” but maybe I am wrong

Well if they get offended by a child calling them chubby, then can GFT. That is as gentle as one can go I suppose.

What about a child calling another child “chubby” ?
