I find it interesting that people are always talking to the "normies" and saying we need to simplify things for the "normies" and we need to make things so they appeal to the "normies". What a egotistical and self righteous view!!!

By "normie" they mean that you're less intelligent than they are, and they need to dumb things down for you. It mean's they're more enlightened than you, and need to treat you like a child and 'simplify' things, as if you're a simpleton that needs to be spoon fed your bite sizes pieces of slop. Fuck that!

You know why I don't appeal to the "normie"? I don't believe in them. I believe there are people that are willing to learn and those that aren't. I want to empower people, not enable them. I don't want them reliant on me, I don't want to cut up their food and feed it to them, I want to teach them to hunt and skin and sow and reap and prepare their own food. I want to teach them that they are powerful people that don't need to rely on others to spoon feed them simplistic bullshit that keeps them enslaved to the cult of convenience. I don't build for the "normie" because you're better than that, and you deserve better than to be treated like an imbecile that needs their hand held every step of the way.

You don't need a podcast host, you don't need a video host, you don't need a music host. They've got you tricked into believing you're a dumbass that needs to pay them to do something as simple as dragging some files into a folder. And make no mistake, when you host your stuff on another platform, it doesn't matter what the hype is today, they don't give a fuck about you and will remove your content if it affects their bottom line. Any of this talk about freedom but you need to use their service is marketing and appealing to your desire to finally find a safe place for your content without the risk of it being removed.

What we do isn't hard, it's just new to you, and what one man can do, another man can do. Don't jump into the easy solutions for hosting your digital content, you're better than that, and you have a real opportunity to actually take control of your art and control the means of distribution, and you don't need to rely on another platform anymore. You are the platform, if you want to be. If this appeals to you, reach out. There's a whole crew of dedicated freedom fighters ready to cheer you on, help you build, and support your work, because we know that once you taste true freedom, you'll never go back.

Wise words. Any recommendation for self hosting Podcasting 2.0? I have PeerTube but I'm really struggling, sometimes it updates, most time it doesn't but I'm not a code person... but am trying!

RSS side works like a treat but I'd love to be properly up and running with PC2.0

Self hosting ftw.

I believe his point is, you're smart enough that you should just be able to figure it out.

I don't agree with his point, but that seems to be it. Good luck.

Castopod

Thanks, I’ll check them out. So far I found a few articles explaining PD2 but none with info on self hosting. Appreciated.

Anytime. It's hard to find truly self-hosted podcast software. I went looking when I wanted something to create my own very basic issue or atom podcast feed.

I couldn't find anything minimalist that would create a simple properly formatted podcast feed xml file from the command line, but I did find the Castopod project.

Ah I remember this one now, I did load it but there's a 50mb limit on file size, happy to go back to it if I can work out how to change that. Cheers!

that might be due to a php file size limit, is 50MB limit in the docs?

I’m not familiar with php, but on my express servers on node I have the same issue and have to configure it for larger file sizes. Probably just one line of code you need to add.

No mention, I’ve asked on GitHub and the Yunohost forum so fingers crossed. I assume there’s a config file somewhere…

I reached out to one of the devs on podcastindex.social I’ll let you know if I hear anything back.

Ahh thanks!

I'm not 100% sure but it looks like the current supported install method is via Docker. I did find these environment variable that you'll want to crank up to 512MB.

CP_MAX_BODY_SIZE ?number (with suffix) 512M

CP_PHP_MEMORY_LIMIT ?number (with suffix) 512M

https://docs.castopod.org/main/fa/getting-started/docker/#environment-variables

Also might want to check your nginx.conf for this value

client_max_body_size 512M;

In my view a normie is not less intelligent. But they prefer convenience and status symbols over independence and they like to follow the flow / group think, they're survival instinct is based around being part of the media matrix normality. They don't lack intelligence - all to the contrary, I believe they lack integrity and resolve.

Regarding "simplifying things for normies", there are many motivations for this, and definitely dishonest ones, but for some simplifying things for normies is a just a daring door opener, you give the normies the chance to leave the matrix, but they have to leave willingly and most won't.

Thanks for all you do. I learn a lot about how to have control of my own content from the V4V crew.

"Normie" is a choice. 💁‍♂️

They can choose to relinquish the title at any time, so I'm not gonna cater to their sensitivities. 🤙

exactly. people need to do their own research.

There is a lot to grapple with to fully understand Bitcoin/money. Takes real time and energy. Undoing decades of mal/mis-understanding. “Normie” IMHO is someone who is on this journey, which is basically everyone.

Normie is a spectrum. There's always a bigger Normie. You are also a Normie in someone else's eyes

if normies understood, we would have already been on a bitcoin standard, aren't we?

When I finally got interested in Bitcoin, I first read the white paper and then I went and read the code.

Because I was already an Ancap it clicked relatively quickly.

I am not saying I am smarter, I am saying I had a toolbox that most people don't have.

How many people even know of Rothbard, Mises and can read code?

If you want to grow this community just saying come look here we have freedom is just not enough.

No normie is going to read this novel you just posted. I didn't. Not for lack of intelligence but I don't know you and not sure if there's any benefit in investing the time. The same applies to normies on other topics. Can you make them get or better see/feel the benefit in simple terms, without the convoluted condescending explainer??

Like I said, I don’t believe in “normies”, I believe in lazy assholes who want to be spoon fed everything, but you would’ve known that if you put in the work. You’re not my target audience.

Ok, that's for bitcoin, nostr or libertarianism.

Now do nuclear energy, aircraft engineering, pizza dough, making a wooden chair....

Everyone is a lazy asshole on 99.99% of topics covering human knowledge and craft or technology. You just happen to focus on the 0.01% that you believe matter.

Not everyone should care about the things you do.

I've done nuclear energy, pizza dough, and making a wooden chair. I should try aircraft engineering.

Consider a ride-sharing app that automatically matches drivers and riders based on location and preferences. The user doesn't need to understand the complex algorithms behind the scenes; they just need to input their destination. The system meets them where they are by simplifying the process and making it accessible to everyone, regardless of their technical expertise. The trade-off here is that while this strategy can lead to rapid adoption and widespread market penetration, it may also result in a lack of depth and customization. Users might become dependent on the simplicity provided and may not develop the skills or understanding needed to adapt to more complex systems or changes.

VS

Open-source software, where users are expected to have or develop some technical skills to fully utilize and contribute to the project. This might involve participants willing to invest time in understanding the rules and strategies to effectively contribute and reach the best outcomes. The system assumes a level of sophistication and willingness to learn from its users. The trade-off here is that while this method fosters a community of skilled, self-reliant users who are invested in the product's development, it may also limit the initial user base to those who are willing to put in the effort. This can slow down adoption but ultimately leads to a more robust and adaptable user community.

Meeting users where they are focuses on minimizing friction and maximizing immediate utility, which can be beneficial for short-term gains and broad accessibility. However, it may sacrifice long-term adaptability and innovation, as users are not encouraged to engage deeply with the system.

Conversely, influencing users to meet you prioritizes robust, scalable solutions that leverage user input and collaboration. This approach can lead to more sustainable and efficient outcomes, as users are empowered to contribute to and improve the system.

Not everyone spends a lot of time on computers. Some spend their time surfing, making music, or building physical objects. We need to simplify things for people who don’t use computers regularly.

Yeah, we should probably have remote control surf boards that we don't have to learn how to mount and ride, let AI make our music for us, and have 3D printers and CNC machines make all of our physical objects for us too. Not everyone spends a lot of time learning how to do those things, and we need to simplify things for people who don't surf regularly, practice their instrument, and develop their skills making physical objects regularly.

Well, I think your analogies are a bit off. It’d be more like if anyone wanted to surf, they’d have to build their own surfboard. Or to listen to music, you’d get the music sheet with the 🎼 and you’d have to know how to play instruments to listen to it.

It's not like I'm asking you to build your own computer so you can surf the web. I'm simply pointing out that the cult of convenience enslaves you to the will of technobros, and what they're providing for you isn't that difficult for you to do for yourself, if you're willing to take the thirty minutes it takes to figure this stuff out. But I understand, doing things for themselves is too hard for some people, they lack the will and curiosity, and they'd rather have others do it for them rather than learn how to do it for themselves. That's cool, different strokes for different folks. Those people aren't my target audience.

Although convenience is being misused right now, it is not inherently evil

I agree, and I never claimed convenience is evil. I don't change the oil in my car. It's a pain in the ass, so I choose not to do it, but if I wanted to, I could. And I've never skinned a deer, but if I wanted to, I could learn how to. I want people to realize that they have a choice. I want them to make conscious decisions in their lives.

By analogy, I want them to choose to eat fast food because they want to, not because they lack the skills to make their own hamburger. And I don't want them to be afraid to learn how to make their own hamburger because Ronald McDonald has convinced them that cooking a hamburger is too hard.

I want people to know that hosting their own music and videos isn't hard, it's simply that they don't know how to do it, and if they want to have the ultimate control over the distribution of their content, it's easy and available, and they don't need to be afraid of it or feel too dumb to do it. I don't want them to think that the realm of computers is a magical one that only the techno-elites can understand and manipulate. I want them to know that they too are powerful agents in this world, and what one man can do, they can also do if they wanted to.

Anyone can learn how to do anything. But it’s up to them to spend their time on things they want to. Could you respond in not essays please

you haven't been in the game long enough. that's all son.
