This will be controversial, and potentially offensive to people who object to dispatching animals in a less than optimal way. In my defense, I did not expect the results that I observed and will not elect to repeat this process. I had a buck goat and a ram that needed to be culled from our herd.

Generally I use a 12 gauge shotgun with T shot at very close range in the head. Death is instant. I carry a .357 magnum revolver as an EDC defensive weapon with a specific load out: empty resting chamber, 125 gr JHP 1700 fps 802 ftlbs, 180 gr JHP 1500 fps 899 ftlbs, copper tumble upon impact, 2 180 gr 1400 fps 783 ftlbs hard cast. I do this for a variety of reason I won’t explain here, in short I used these bullets to shoot the goat at 30 feet through the chest. I shot the goat five times and thought I missed five times. My autopsy revealed that none of those bullets performed in the expected way with the exception of the hard cast which are included to defeat body armor in a mass shooting scenario. There was practically no tissue damage, no nerve disruption, in fact the goat twitched like they do when the needle is inserted for a vaccine, and kept grazing until blood loss prompted him to lay down and go to sleep. I simply didn’t bring more bullets because I didn’t imagine I would need them.

The lesson here is that for those of you who carry a defensive handgun, let’s hope you never need it, but if you do, know that most bullets will not stop an assailant in an expedient manner. This buck was the size of a large man, 200 pounds with very similar physiology in front of the diaphragm to human beings. The .357 magnum is the most powerful 9mm by a large margin, the cartridges are top of the line hunting rounds. There is lots of talk about penetration, but in defense we shoot to stop the behavior and the energy from the bullet has to be effectively delivered to your target. If it passes through not only will it not be effective, it may strike an unintended target. What are your experiences, and what defensive carry ammunition do you prefer?

Handguns are a horrible way to stop or kill someone. They're convenient to carry, but it really takes a good rifle, or shotgun, round.

If you watch enough security videos, you learn that handguns usually just start a long countdown, unless good placement is practiced.

Up until now I had zero experience with using a handgun aside from target shooting. I am not impressed at all. The solutions I see for defense are, resort to using a handgun more like a combat knife might be used, or find a very powerful round like the .454 Casull or perhaps the 10mm. I also think bullet selection is extremely important, I’m going to buy some Liberty defensive ammunition and see how that performs on wet low density foam. It follows that military sentiment about side arms is, they’re useful for fighting your way back to the rifle that you never should have put down in the first place. Powerful pistols are often untenably huge and not remotely suitable for concealed carry.

I know that my very small EDC pistol even with good ammo is NOT effective enough, which is why I carry a spare mag and have no issues firing until the threat is ended, even if I need to reload.

I am slowly figuring out what I want to carry in a chest rig if I'm in bear territory (while hiking), and I am leaning towards 10mm for capacity and ease of reloading. I love how versatile 10mm can be, too. Pud loads to skull crackers.

.357 Sig could work. Good for EDC and it's got the stopping power.

It's barky and at that point, I'd rather just carry 40, and if I'm gonna carry 40...I'll carry a 10mm...

It just keeps getting worse... LOL!

There's no good compact carry 10mm pistols, though. The shorty lock 10mm is probably not fun to shoot.

You could go with an old-school S&W revolver. They come in some nice calibers and some good compact frames. But, if you're that committed to the 10mm... sorry 😂🤷‍♂️.

I can get a revolver in 10mm if I wanted to.

The issue is capacity. 12-15 rounds of 10mm is a fairly potent payload for a handgun. I much prefer 10mm to 45.

If we are talking revolvers, I'd be tempted to carry a 44mag and pair that with a lever action in the same caliber.

There are 8 round .357 Mag revolvers.

They are fairly large, no?

Check out the SW 627 2.6 in barrel.

Lol. Yup.

I can dream of one some day. Those aren't cheap. Totally worth it... But... Until BTC goes to the moon, not a chance to buy one new. Lol

I'm hankering after one of these things, which are surprisingly good for the money.

This is a beautiful pistol. And you're right. Surprisingly great for the money! A nice hefty 16 round 10mm. 👀

I know two people who have them and actually shoot them. They seem to be very reliable, and my goodness, nothing beats a 1911 style trigger.

I've actually never fired a pistol with a 1911 style trigger. Good for rapid fire?

It's not so much a trigger as a bullet button.

It really can be. You still need your fundamentals, but the trigger is the least issue in that case.

Lol. I need to call it a night. 👋🌚

Stay safe!

Goodnight.

I try, but if I can't be safe, I'm gonna try to be awesome.

I suggest looking in to some of Glock's .357 pistols.

I've shot one. I don't like Glocks, in general. If I go that route, it'll be a S&W M&P.

Glocks are decent. I'm not a huge fan of 'em either. The frame is just too bloody blocky. They damn well do function well, though. 🤷‍♂️

Until they break something dumb... (It does happen.) and gosh, the triggers are trashy even in the newer ones.

The grip angle is what does it for me. Not at all good for me.

I know. Luckily, I never had much of a chance to use my sidearm. Everyone complains about those bloody triggers, though. Everyone! Although, most of us were able to tolerate the grip.

I was never issued a side arm. I wasn't cool enough for that. 😂

I can shoot some Glocks well enough, but... It takes more to get hits.

My built pistols are cake, compared. 1911 grip angle and better texture, IMO. I haven't even swapped out the triggers on the 19 and 17 sized builds since they work well enough. I've mostly been shooting my EDC pistol to get better with it.

What do you currently use for your EDC?

Springfield Hellcat. Stupidly good to shot got how small it is, even with +P hollow point defensive ammo.

Hollow point? 😂 Who do you plan on shootin'?!

Unarmored humans and dogs, if need be.

I'm not good enough to reliably headshot armored assailants with a pistol yet.

Even with armor, my guess is three .45 LC packing 1300 ftlbs to the rib cage is going to take your wind and knock you down. If you’re quick the other three are available for close range follow up. I think with powerful cartridges six is always enough. Worst case, six with six more on a speed loader.

Overall, you're correct. My only counterpoint is that multiple assailant incidents are on the rise. More firepower in hand is a very good thing, IMO

I agree, I tend to see it as I’m either being prepared while participating in polite society, or I’m coping with a combat zone in which case the loud-out would be substantially different. There are situations in which probably being prepared adequately all the time is unreasonable, and that lack of adequate preparedness means assured defeat. There are legal ramifications to consider surrounding a defensive shooting scenario with lots of preparedness. It doesn’t look good in court. For me it boils down to assessing risk. Multiple assailants? Probably just give them what they want.

*load-out

Lol. Truth be told, military grade sidearms are not as good as most folk believe. 😅😏

It’s big, but the SW Governor with three buckshot and two Liberty .45 LC seems like a stop everything right now kind of gun. You could even load the first chamber with #4, now the assailant is blind, has massive pain, and probably is considering options other than continuing with the previous agenda. Now you have time and five shots left.

Considering bear country, I’d carry nothing short of a lever action in 45-70 with a pocket full of shells, even so, good luck. An angry Kodiak is a truly terrifying animal.
