I think lord of the rings is good though. I watched the first and really enjoyed it but I was annoyed with the huge cliffhanger at the end. The movies are too long so I never finished the series lol

I read the books growing up (and a couple times since), the movies did a great job of transferring it to the big screen. It was always thought to be an unfilmable story, but Peter Jackson did pretty well.
Yup…it’s such an epic story….my expectations for the translation into a movie were low but he did an incredible job…I thought the two towers would be especially difficult due to the slow pacing and detail but he pulled it off….he (Peter Jackson) was obviously a huge fan of the story and adored Tolkien

Plus the entire world tore that movie to shreds, they had no way to propaganda it to success 😂 If they tried it would have been too obvious. They need to keep the appearance of impartiality.
It’s not one data point. I’ve found that I agree with most of their movie ratings. Of course I won’t agree with all of them. No one will agree with all the ratings because it’s an average of many ratings lol everyone is different and likes different things. It’s a useful tool, not an objective end all be all. I can’t realistically watch every movie I come across and feel good about how I spend my time 🤷♂️

I don’t use IMDb ratings to dictate my choices. I usually go by director, the trailer, the synopsis sometimes. Also what others thought of the movie

I was referring to IMDb & RT. As an aggregator of reviews, they are averages, by definition the mainstream view.
I prefer to follow directors writers & actors I like. What have they created, what inspired them, what new films do they enjoy. The same with reviewers. I find ones that have similar tastes to me, rather than an average.
I also find those sites focus only on new movies, where I find a lot of value in older films too.
Yeah it’s an average. It’s a useful tool haha and the top 250 are mostly older movies

It lets you keep track of what you like, and recommends stuff based on comparing your favorites to others with similar tastes. I've got far more out of this tool than I have ever got out of IMDb or RT.
I make my own opinion but I’m not going to watch a random movie rated as a 5.3 out of 10 that will most likely just waste my time lol
