When it comes to cocktails, there are 2 different categories. The ones that are shaken and the ones that are stirred

Usually, the ones that are stirred are predominantly liquor based and don't contain juice, whereas the ones that are shaken must contain juice.

Juice based cocktails require shaking for aeration. The shake imparts a different taste to the beverage in doing so.

There are exceptions to the rule like the mojito, which you can build in the glass.

But usually the 2 kinds of cocktails followed the above mentioned.

The tools required for both categories are a jigger, to measure your alcohol, liquor, and juices.

For stirred drinks you will need a mixing glass and a bar spoon. As well as large ice cubes and a Collins strainer.

Ice programs are often the most overlooked in the cocktail world. The level of dilution in a cocktail is very important. And for that reason, using the right kind of ice is also very important.

In the shaken category, you need a cocktail shaker tin and a strainer.

I'd just point out that typically speaking, you also want to shake anything with egg, cream, or other opaque ingredient. There are exceptions, like the White Russian, but on the whole, just like the citrus rule, these want to be aerated as well.
