Just tried mastadon for the first time.
I don’t know why, but it feels depressing.

Yes, is very cumbersome.
Do you run a server? Or just user?
Just user
Same, I stopped using it when I came to nostr.
i checked it out once - didn't stick. But would be good to have competitive differences between all 3 protocol based social platform
Like a review of each or point by point or something
Was on Mastodon in 2016/2017. Didn't take 1 week to be kicked out by the admin of the room I was in (for a meme about the president) ... realized quickly delegating the censorship to individuals instead of big corporations wasn't the answer.
Is the only instance I toot!
You probably tried the wrong server. If you follow the right people, and curate your timeline a little, it's quite fun. Of course it shows that Mastodon probably has 100x the users that Nostr has.
But yeah, that's one of the problems; You gotta find a good server to start with, and explore from there. Lots of trash too ...
Mastodon is a shit hole. No zaps. And every other person thinks saying the N word is a surrogate for a personality.
Mastodon feels like a step in the right direction, waayyyy too late..
Semi-decentralised (self-hosted servers) should've been the 2000's era, technology permitting.
But it wasn't.
I think it's what Tim Berners-Lee originally envisioned for around that timeframe, but centralisation won.
I think Nostr is outright skipping the "logical next step from centralisation" to full decentralisation because technology reached an inflection point that permits it.
But yeh, I shut my server down a few weeks after spinning it up and using it everyday... A lot of stuff was just missing (especially the ⚡ zaps⚡) or questionably designed.
