But before I pass out I wanna #asknostr a question. If you use something like WoS whats holding you back from using something more self-custodial?

Is there a lack of content that breaks down current options and tradeoffs for diffrent set ups? Option paralysis, and not knowing where to start? Dont care and just wanna use whats easy? I want to understand and help bridge the gap if i can.

Ease of use and no interest from wondering away from their own knowledge. For the same reason I do not raise my own cows and chickens, or grow vegetables šŸ¶šŸ¾šŸ«‚šŸ’¤šŸ’œ good night

Perfectly said šŸ«”šŸ’œšŸ«‚

So I can understand what you're saying when it comes to ease of use but I don't understand the rest of your statement. Are you saying that people are lazy and don't want to learn?

I was using it pretty much only for nostr and zapping. I have Phoenix for other stuff, but the fees are too high for zaps.

Zeus and Mutiny seem like they're still in development and I'm waiting for them to get more polished and professional. Although I haven't really tested them, maybe they are ready for primetime, however the "fued" they had recently didn't instill much confidence.

I will never use Muun because I think the way they do lightning is wrong and unsustainable.

The recent tiff between Zeus and Mutiny, I can understand how that would not breed confidence. In a high-fee environment I can understand why mutiny did what it did, especially with the way that Zeus implements its node in a phone scenario Even if I don't necessarily agree with them doing it in the first place. At least they rectified the situation within a couple hours and put out the option to let you potentially get screwed over by force closes.

I actually haven't heard a lot of good things about muun. Lol

WoS is plug and play, you download it and it works. I'm not knowledgeable when it comes to running my own node etc. WoS is also cheap to use to zap. If a super easy self custody option was available, plug and play, then I'd be in on it.

Self custody has too many steps that are unclear, inconsistent, and imprecise.

Mmmmmm. So more clear content then.

I think it’s usually the upfront 3-50k to open a channel using other services.

I understand that the cost can definitely be a bit prohibitive especially in high fee environments.

Once it’s set up, I think it’s superior than custodial. People just want a plug and play option.

I’ve run my own node before and have experience with forced closures. At this point in my life, and with the time I have available, I prefer a web based custodial solution. I mitigate risk by holding a small amount of money in this lightning wallet. I spend more on beef jerky than I keep in it. šŸ¤™

Fair, at least you've experimented with running your own node and made a conscious decision on the trade-offs you're willing to accept.

Exactly. People in camps yelling at each other does nothing to serve the cause, or to educate people. Try it, learn about it, explain the tradeoffs, educate, and let the individual decide.

I think some of the feedback I'm starting to hear too is there seems to be a lack of content explaining these trade-offs in a concise manner.

It’s not a concise topic and people often don’t spend the time to teach people, or are poor educators. With everything in this space, there are tradeoffs. As a teacher myself, I would never ever try to teach everything there is about running a lightning node to a beginner. There’s a progression and a lot to tackle.

Yeah, I guess that's entirely fair. Also, I didn't know you're a teacher. That's pretty cool. šŸ‘

My students use WOS for our class marketplace šŸ˜‚šŸŽ‰šŸ¤™

I guess what I was just getting at is I have technical knowledge and I was wondering if there was any way that I could help people make that next step. And I was trying to figure out what the missing piece is. I really do want to see Bitcoin succeed and scale in the most self-sovereign way possible. And I know other people do too.

For me, at this point, with the caveat that things are getting better very quickly, I always cater to my audience. 95% of the people I teach aren’t ready to run their own lightning node, so instead I spend more time talking about the tradeoffs. Then 99% choose to use a custodial solution, and only use it for ā€œchangeā€ and small amounts. The other 1% I point towards resources that they can use to educate themselves further.

I found this breakdown by Darth Coin helpful. https://darthcoin.substack.com/p/lightning-wallets-comparison

I’m a bit worried I don’t know enough yet to srart moving bigger amounts around without fucking something up… so I’m a bit stuck with a few m sats in different wallets , I don’t want to rush all into one and get it wrong. Am thinking about a bit box , haven’t made the leap yep , that’s where I’m at

What?
