16 GB RAM

Linux
and it should start and run
I just really want something that runs and lets me type.
X1 Carbon is great for me. Good keyboard, good screen, and snappy even after 6 years.
Oh, nice. 👀 Starting at €2000.
I've got more of a €600 budget. 😂
He keeps looking at laptops for €1000+ and then saying, "This is what you need, but it's too expensive."
Maybe a used one.
You need to be eBay maxing ASAP
This is the one I have, but I have the upgrade with 2 GB

This pains me
It used to at least usually start from a stick, but since today it can't seem to find the stick. Have to go into BIOS on start and then start and then take the stick out and restart. Had to do it three times, for it to work, and then I tried to start Coracle and the browser froze and then the computer froze and I had to restart again and nearly had a nervous breakdown and he's like,
You look stressed. You wanna go out for dinner? 🥴
Seriously?
A raspberry pis with a screen would be better than that... And I hate those things...
Yeah. I wanted a raspberry once, to run a Bitcoin node and he was like, I'll buy a new one and give you the old one. But the old one can't handle a Bitcoin node, so I dropped the topic.
OMG... Why can't you buy one on your own? Do you not get any budgeted fun money to do with as you please?
He doesn't want a used one. Nevermind.
ego 😑
Why not? Nuffin wrong with used hardware. I hardly ever buy new electronics.
I think it's because he wants a new one. If I get a used one, it's not as interesting for him to use.
Which actually makes me more keen to get a used one. It's more-likely to actually be mine.
You need your own hardware. Geez...
I do. I'm just DONE. Tired of discussing it with him. It's been over a year.
Guys can be really dumb. I'm sorry he's being so thick about this.
He earns 6 figures and buys new cars with cash, but his wife has a computer that cannot send e-mail without crashing.
😂 Fuck me to hell, I'm so fucking done.
I'm sorry. I shouldn't complain. I'm blessed.
But I would like to also be blessed with a computer that can start and send e-mail. Then I would be even more blessed.
Well, looks like the computer fairy might be bringing one with the mail, so, miracles never cease.
And I want that more than a steak dinner. I do.
And I am not going to pretend otherwise.
I... Don't get that. *sighs*
It's not unreasonable. It's not exorbitant. It seems like he'd rather buy you a big rock or something you'd consider useless instead.
He sees computers as "his" thing. A big rock is #stuffgirlslike
He's totally in shock now that anyone would give me a computer. Thinks it's bizarre.

Does he not realize you're more technically able than 99% of the world? A computer is a "Stella" thing in this case, not a girl or a boy thing. Everyone needs good tools. Tools aren't just for boys.
No, he doesn't realize that. I'm the non-techy person in the house who cleans the bathrooms and cooks dinner.
He's always like, are you chatting with your little Internet friends again?
Yes. I am. We're talking about steak dinners. 😂
Sometimes sort of surreal.
Are you winning wifey?
Yes, we are building a new Internet. Also, I picked up the dry cleaning.
Oh, thanks! Did you remember my gray suit?
Do I need to sit him down over a beer in person and have "your wife is a brilliant, mad genius who is planning to take over the world" talk?
😂 won't help. You're just one of my little Internet friends.
But I'm a guy. And I won't be in the internet if I'm sitting there having a beer. He'll like me. Nearly everyone does pretty immediately. I'm... Infectious. 😅
This guy doesn't even care about Bitcoin, despite his own stack tripling in worth in three years.
We could list on the NASDAQ and he'd probably stay home from the IPO party because he'll convince himself that it's just a joke. 🤣🤣
https://pcpartpicker.com/guide/ you can give him ssh access.
Oh, he already owns a really awesome gaming PC and has a solid dev laptop from work. He just wants a third computer.
One of those fancy ones with a tablet screen that you can turn 180° or something. With a nice graphic card for video games.
I don't use a pen or play video games. I just want to edit text. 🤷♀️
I have this 2020 Lenovo X1 Carbon sitting barely ever used in box, flashed with Debian.
Intel core i7 vpro 8th gen 15.5 GiB memory and 512 GB hard drive. Works great, it just needs a new battery and watch battery to keep time.
I have no idea how much international shipping is. But would happily part ways with it.
Ok, intervention time. Money buys you time with your computer.
A €2000 computer gets you all the no compromise parts. There are no unintentional bottlenecks. With all that head-room above current application demands they can last a decade.
€1200 gets you a great computer with a bit less oomph, It is just lower amounts of quality parts, less ram, less storage, fewer cores. it will run all the software you want, just don't expect too much out of it 5 years on.
€500 gets you a computer that runs today's software for now, but now corners are definitely getting cut. You are getting truly slower, cheaper parts. It is not going to be amazing today and you'll be back to tolerating your computer rather than using it in a few years.
The good news is that sales exist. Lenovo will sell you that €2300 unit for €1600 on occasion. Maybe get last year's top model for a steal. Their promotion emails are worth a subscription.
And the browser needs to work. Even for something like Primal or Highlighter.
No browser can handle modern Primal. Up until about 3-4 months ago. I'm on 128gb and a 3900x overclocked.
i have this ancient (nearly 4 year old) ideapad 3, working power supply, 20gb memory, 512gb SSD
did me a good 18 months of service as a dev machine
superficial damage due to how many times i'd opened the case that i probably can't sell it second hand anyway
if you can organise how to get it to you i'm happy to give it... it's a possession that i literally haven't used in over a year
also, the keyboard on it has almost not been used, as i have owned mechanical keyboards all of its life and don't compute on the go at all, i literally can't touch type on these garbage things because i don't want to waste my brain retraining for something i don't want to do anyway, and a keyboard that can't handle the amount of use i will give it
That sounds way better than what I have, but I think I might already be getting one from someone else.
well if you are sorted, sure, i would only want you to pay for shipping in any case, it's done pretty good service and still runs fine - yeah, even the display hasn't been used much because it's mostly been attached to an external monitor
oh yeah, it does have some funky USB sockets though, but they mostly seem to work ok, just sometimes some devices disconnect or send funny signals on occasion
You guys have totally cheered me up, fr. I was upset.
You can't omagine how hard it is to develop software, when the computer won't start or can't load the IDE or whatnot. I spend literally hours every day, just sitting there, wishing I could code.
Bizarre situation.
Gives me lots of time to shitpost, tho, so that's not all bad.
Why not have two? You can compile more than one thing at once.
I won't be here for it to arrive, soon. I wouldn't be able to take it until next month. I'll be stateside.
