GM Nostr! I have a Nostr question, I think this has to do with relays. I had the impression that things I post on here are kind of locked in, there's a network of relays so if one censors me not all do. So my posts stay up until I request deletion and even then it's iffy if it gets completely deleted. And that's my understanding of a big benefit here on Nostr.

I do a lot of psychonaut adventures and one of these I wanted documented. This dream/meditation vision happened Feb. 1, 2025 and to verify that it happened I posted about it here on Feb. 2 and screenshot the post and got the print out of that post notarized to like, doubly prove this happened. You can think it's weird if you'd like but whatever, I'm weird.

But yesterday I scrolled all the way back to confirm that post is still there and it's not, it's gone. I checked again today just in case. None of my posts for the two weeks or so at the end of January and beginning of February are there, only the things I've reposted.

What happened and where did my post go? I still have the video and could post again, but the whole point of posting it then was to provide a proof of timestamp.

It is most likely operator error, I'm in way over my head being here because I'm very bad at tech. But I'm trying my best to learn! If you have any good layperson's sources for understanding this situation it would be much appreciated! 🫂🤞🙌🥰

storage isn't free

Your posts will get time-stamped and signed locally on the device you are logged in with your nostr keys. Then you send them to any number of relays. Relays will decide if or for how long they will store your note. So if you need to store your notes for a long time you could use a paid relay, to make sure they keep your notes around. Or you could run your own relay, if you really want to be sure about notes not disappearing

Thank you! Where does one pay for relays? I don't really understand them at all, and even the page in Amethyst where I can see the relays doesn't let me see the whole page so idk what's going on 😅

Is setting up my own relay something that would be feasible for someone not super great at tech?

I see how this can be super confusing, it was even confusing for me! And I am a tech person :D

Maybe running a relay for yourself may a bit too much... It involves some knowledge about servers, hosting and such. Nostr devs are always working on makig things easier, but there is still ways to go. maybe you can find a tech friend that can help you set it up, or even run one for you!

To post to custom relays, you can add the relay address (starts with wss://) under the relay settings in your nostr app .

for paid relays, usually you have to go to the relay website, input your NPUB and pay a fee via lightning. most use a monthly payment subscription. here is a list of relays, you can see which are free and which are paid by looking at the price: https://nostrwat.ch/

hope this helps!

thank you so much this helps a lot!!!

Even If you are not super technical person that's not a problem at all. Especially in this age where AI is answering all your questions.

You can tun your relay easily. Get one of the smallbtable computers and convert it to Umbrel or start9 home server. They are primarily a bitcoin nodes but you decide what you will runn on it and both have an option for having a personal relay.

I'm not sure if blaster relays are still a thing but they blast your notes to other relays spreading it all over.

Another thing is to try viewing your account in other clients.

I doubt your notes were simply deleted because I can still find my first note from end of 2022.

Your notes are somewhere. You just need to find them somehow. Try nostr.band search option.

Thank you so much!!

Oh, I completely forgot! We have [Citrine](https://github.com/greenart7c3/Citrine/releases/tag/v0.8.0). Don't be scared of the Github webpage. On the bottom of the page you have releases. Download and instal the Universal one on your android.

This is a relay running on your android phone only and only you can post to it. It is storing the events you posted, replied etc. That's your best and easiest option to keep your notes safely stored as a backup.

Copy the address of your citrine app (by clicking the addres on top of the screen in the app will copy it) and paste it to local relays in Amethyst.

Remember that this local relay is only living on your device as a backup and whatever you post to it others wont be able to see that which is logical since the address is local and not something accessable over the web. Therefore other relays are needed to broadcast to Nostr network.

This local relay is just as a backup if other goes fown or they wipe all the data, you still have a backup which you can broadcast to other if necessary.

Currently using it working well 👌

Has a new paid relay that I'd recommend: nostr.land IIRC

Thank you!

You're most welcome.

The relays do not sync to each other. It's very disorganized.

Some of the relays purge the notes to save space. Damus relay just purged their whole relays a couple weeks ago.

You can download citrine relay and install in your phone to keep a copy of your notes. It's searches all the relays and extracts your notes.

Unfortunately the relay software doesn't sync to other relays so sometimes 1 note will be on 1 relay but not other relays.

They need to work on the relay software but it's all volunteers so progress is slow.

Oh I totally get that and it's not a complaint that it's slow! It's such a super cool thing that's been created using volunteering and I really admire it, perhaps even moreso because it's all Greek to me! I will look into citrine, thank you for the advice!

citrine is a great tool to keep a local backup of your notes! Just remember that the notes will not be accessible for others if the only place they are stored is on your phone. But a lot of clients do allow you to "rebroadcast", in case that should happen

But they can be. The whole purpose of blaster relays is to spread the note to other relay. But I'm not sure if they are still around.

ive heard that too. I could be using one and I wouldn't even know it. The relay software is not standardized. It's all over the place Makes it hard for users to understand.

Can you find it on nostr.band? If not, possibly gone

Long term data storage is something a P2P solution will hopefully help with in the next few years, instead of relying on these federated relay servers

Advanced Nostr Search was able to find a bunch of your posts from around that time-frame:

https://advancednostrsearch.vercel.app/?npub=npub1hspwpfkq7qddnj6h52c03muzgx79l7teeez99n57ys77g4m4vujs3hly9q&toDate=2025-02-08&fromDate=2025-01-19

Didn't find the one you mentiined, though. Thought maybe I'd be able to find it using Primal's advanced search, since they index from most known relays, but no, not there either.

Are you sure you posted it? Maybe it's sitting in your drafts in Amethyst?

Nostr.band's date filter wasn't working for me, so I wasn't able to check there.

As for running your own relay as someone non-technical, there are a few decent options.

1. Citrine, which someone mentioned previously, is a private relay you can run on your Android phone or tablet. It's not available in the Play Store, though. You'll need to install the nostr:npub10r8xl2njyepcw2zwv3a6dyufj4e4ajx86hz6v4ehu4gnpupxxp7stjt2p8.

2. Nostr Relay Tray is a really easy relay to install and run on your desktop PC, made by nostr:npub1syjmjy0dp62dhccq3g97fr87tngvpvzey08llyt6ul58m2zqpzps9wf6wl. You can find it here: https://github.com/CodyTseng/nostr-relay-tray

3. You can run a cloud-hosted relay with relatively easy configuration options by going to https://relay.tools Just bear in mind that there is a monthly cost for this hosting service.

Thank you for the detailed and thoughtful response! I just checked through drafts and rechecked the printout I have of it, and it certainly posted. Thank you for letting me know about zap store! I will investigate these options 🥰
