Pop OS COSMIC looks kind of amazing. I am not running it yet, as people are reporting some issues. I'll give it a month and then dive in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyXzjnd6q3g

I tried the beta a few months ago and it was horrible. They're wasting their time I think. Considering switching to Fedora.
it's been a long while since i've ran fedora, but it's always a solid choice.
as for Pop, i think it just needs more time to cook.
I tried it a while back.
I didn't think it had anything more to offer than the others. Maybe its under the hood that better?
i run Pop now, been running it for the last year or so. before that, i was on elementary OS for several years. i honestly prefer Pop. it's been very solid.
I meant with cosmic.
I now use my own version artix & devuan. Both styled on #! (Crunchbang)
My wife uses mxlinux.
If I was going yo use an Ubuntu derivative, I'd go with Mint.
However my main choice is because of systemd - just too heavy and too many bugs lol!
I was on Fedora Cosmic Atomic for a while and even with the bugs it was a great experience.
i've tested it a bit and have had issues with it overwriting custom keybindings back to default keybindings on reboot.. ..i have an install script for Arch if you don't want to deal with Ubuntu-base limitations.. ..still working on custom configs, so this is just default configs for now: https://github.com/e33io/scripts/blob/main/arch-install-cosmic.sh
Isn't cosmic the release from April of 2024? Why does it take PopOS so long to adopt the upstream releases?
they stopped updates to build cosmic, april was alpha and they've been working on an LTS which just released this week
their plan now is to get back on quicker schedule
I've been tempted to install Pop!OS on my Thinkpad, I've traditionally used Ubuntu for my laptop installs, but their recent (unnecessary IMHO) shift to rust tools has really pissed me off.
I'm in a similar situation, where I just want to watch for a bit before wiping my disk and changing distro!
People have a lot of complaints about Ubuntu, but it generally "just works"... and I'm far too old to argue with that... 😹
why migration to Rust is not a good idea (I'm not a dev)?
I'm not just a fan of changing something unless it's broke. I have nothing against rust, per se.
But changing the core utils from very known, very old, highly battle tested and maintained code to rust utils, without proper testing (already there are many critical bugs reported), just isn't something I can agree with--particularly when we're talking about core utils.
Also the original core utils maintainers are skilled in C/C++. Now to say they need to learn rust to maintain the same toolset, is not exactly fair IMHO.
got you! thank you.
I guess it's hard to find a balance between stability that is offered by "old", and progress that the "new" enables.
Usually "new" wins over "old" when is at least 10x better.
So, the question is: is Rust 10x better than C/C++ ?
I'm not in a position to answer this...
Been on it for 3 days and it runs about 10x better than any nostr clients
*ducks*
sounds like you need better nostr apps.
to be honest i need better nostr apps. amethyst crashes 10x a day likes it 2023 all over again.
yeah, I had to drop amethyst for similar reasons
yakki + primal + notedeck
kidding aside would say the polish level is higher than nostr clients. For example no crashing
I did have to fix my wifi config and my terminal config
I enjoy it, it is keyboard-centric enough and the tiling is good enough to scratch my i3 itch. I don’t find myself fiddling with it. It just works, even in its infancy.
Clicking the upgrade OS button on linux makes me sweat
I've run it since 3 days. I love Pop OS Cosmic.
I've been using the previous version on a System76 laptop. The UX is fantastic, compared to other Linux distributions.
So buggy, bailed back to Ubuntu
I think I’ve been in Linux too long. I can’t support any highly forked version of a desktop o/s. They are all destined to fail. I hope they prove me wrong
Pop has been around for 8 years 😂
I'm using COSMIC and love it.
I've been using it for about two years now.
