Why is being profitable taboo on nostr?
Discussion
It's not is it?
Depends who you ask I guess, but there seems to be an unspoken rule or expectation that we’re all supposed to be here to give everything away indefinitely.
I guess there's an element of no-one is going to build the foundations unless we build them ourselves, then the masses will feel more comfortable stepping onto #Nostr. Your bragging rights are, you were the tree planters, you shielded the next generation from having all their data harvested by the almighty Zuck 🤣
This note reminds me to raise the price of my tape on shopstr:
nostr:naddr1qqjxxenyvd3rjwp3956kzv35956rjve3943x2df595mxgvrrvv6xywrx8qurvqgkwaehxw309ash2arg9ehx7um5wgcjucm0d5hsygr83gcgukwzfmsmxs4sl6dtmahalfwuesc2avn455m7ral6qcylhspsgqqqwmpq4ddzm0
The longer everyone ignores my fine product(s), the higher the price will go.
This is how I #Nostr. 💪
"You guys are making a profit?"

Negative 😂 But according to some (many?) you should never even want to be.
You mean with zaps?
With any business endeavor, whether building an app, providing a service, being a content creator, etc. The method of payment is less relevant, but would include zaps.
I always thought one of the main goals is to be profitable
Yeah, but then people complain that your service is "too expensive" or you're "gauging".
I've had people say this to me in the past, how I charge too much per hour, but they don't want to go anywhere else because the competitors aren't as good lol.
If the service is too expensive, they should get that service elsewhere.
If elsewhere isn’t as good then the first business wins.
In Britain we called "Tall poppy syndrome" and maybe the rest of the world knows this effect as the "Crab mentality".
Nostr is just a small reflection of humanity, we are all like that.
Lots of commies around these days.
If you make a profit, you're fiat. If your company is big enough, you're also a suit.
Some people like to complain about what others' businesses are offering as a service or product, but aren't themselves willing to enter the arena and offer something better.
🎯
Well said, meanwhile all I'm complaining is not being allowed to enter most industries because they're so highly regulated - might just be a planned economy in disguise around here 🤔
Yeah, I'm convinced most regulations' singular purpose is to keep competition at bay, under the guide of protecting the customer.
They are legal cartels, organisations like the FDA, FAA, and many other 3-letter-agencies are to their sector of the economy what the central bank is to banking: A means to fix prices and circumvent competition, guaranteed in perpetuity through force and coercion, courtesy of the government.
Nailed it. The “fiat” part of being in business is having to play by a ton of regulatory frameworks that hinder growth (and not just monetary riches growth - I’m talking about the kind of growth that everyone can benefit from).
There are plenty of reasons to not be in business for pure “grow-it-ever-bigger”; but regulations often make those other approaches quite difficult in this day and age.
As Rothbard writes, regulatory agencies are nothing but facilitators of legal cartels - Small wonder the biggest corporations hardly ever argue against regulations - it keeps new competitors from entering their markets and provides a great deal of stability to their market shares, prices, and pace of innovation. Parasites and monstrosities all.
Because profitable ideas don’t qualify for grants and handouts from Jack
Being profitable is rather basic need than a taboo. Profits is for every business what the heartbeat is for the body.

I don't think its taboo per se... everybody wants to see success stories. They just really want them to be ones that align with their own definitions of value. 😅
It certainly feels taboo to me, but I think one of the other replies hit the nail on the head describing it as the “crab mentality.” I found this meme that sums it up well. “You can’t win unless it means I can win.” “We don’t do that around here.” “Not in my city, punk.” The unwritten NIPs of nostr, if you will. 😂
The unwritten NIPs 😂🤣 like MTV's Behind the Music?? That could be it's own little podcast series, y'know 👀
Get out of the fiat mentality and strive for Satoshi N. consciousness.
