Tried to purple pill my friend dev last night.
He asked: why would people choose nostr apps over the current web2 alternatives that are already there and work?
How would you answer that?

enjoy ads? enjoy algorithms that aren’t aligned with your wants or needs? enjoy being the product? enjoy building and rebuilding your network on $nextThing? enjoy terms of service and privacy policies meant to protect the company and exploit you? enjoy APIs that get locked down and gated later?
no? me either. checkout nostr.
There is no algorithm to manipulate you here.
Because experimenting, participating and building something new is almost always more exciting.
Also you don't have incomprehensible proprietary walled gardens from big corpos 😉
If you don’t get it or don’t understand it sorry I don’t have time to convince you.
lol we can’t have that attide
"You own that network, and no one can silence you there. It has an inbuilt monetization mechanism. It's not perfect, but we have been building it together, and you can also participate."
It depends on who your talking to really for many it can be the no email "signup" privacy reasons
For others it can be the the multitude of diffrent usecases under a single npub
For others it can be a new way to research like pablo his highlighter project
The possibilities are endless the current social media is just bound by whatever that company deems worthy of building with this thing you get niche apps and things build simply because its open and someone else on this earth thought it should be build
We are not using it for the problems of today. We are using it in preparation for the problems of tomorrow.
There is currently no easy way to convince anyone to use #nostr app.
The current ones serve the masses of users well, they have all the playful content they need to consume for now. 🤷🏻♂️
That’s what it feels like and that’s what people object about. Why leave Twitter if they are happy there
In certain regions where there are communication restrictions between people, we may have a better reception, since they can see it as an alternative to the existing ones. But where most can choose, for now I don't think they have the option to choose our
Kinda like bitcoin. People who need it, get it, adopt first.
That's right. Imagine Bitcoin for almost 15 years and we still fight for a large part of people to realize its potential, and that has a direct impact on their economies, especially on those growing populations.
Brazil has become one of these “certain regions”, unfortunately. However, I’m glad someone tossed me a purple pill 💜
I am glad to know that you can have a means of communication free of censorship, Brazil is an example in our region of this increasingly everyday phenomenon, and so some more who will surely discover the purple pill. 🫂🟣
One user account that moves everywhere. And you own it, not Google.
I think the objection to that would be : I don’t mind creating an account with Google login - not a big deal to me
Next step is understanding why it’s better to own your identity instead of letting Google own it. If those two experiences are the same, why let a company have that control?
I think more and more people will be looking for a way to protect their online identity. And if they don’t we need to make them aware of the danger of not protecting it.
Cancelling an individuals digital identity already comes with enormous consequences, and renders success in the fiat world impossible. This will only grow more devastating with time and drive more people to a protected way of existing on the web.
I agree but I wonder to what extent that matters to an average person with little to no audience who has never been cancelled.
Probably not much at all, established network effects are not an easy thing to overcome. If I could force people to do what’s good for them then everyone would be using bitcoin lol. I suppose all we can do is try to educate on the importance of both financial and digital sovereignty, knowing many people won’t have any interest, but I show up everyday for the ones that do want it.
because nostr can’t be banned in Montana and you don’t need to show your ID to use it in Utah
Wtf is this about?!
you know them better than me.
it depends on their prerequisite knowledge of web2, do they remember watching a YouTube video in the timeline of Facebook? Or did they not onboard until after the api’s constricted. If they weren’t early adopters then they won’t be now. At a certain age I default back to the email example.
In this case I might say as you, to see the designs I’ve personally contributed?
They will choose them because they can't tell the difference — until their 3rd, 4th, 5th one, when they notice that "sign in with nostr" isn't just another identity management system, it gives you optional, user-controlled identity that transcends individual products. App usage can be as private as you want, or as public as you want, the user is in control.
