What is a reasonable rate for an open source dev to ask for donations?
Once per month? Quarter? Never?

Once per month sounds fair
Once per block
This is very personal, I never ask. 🤙
Three to one. The Gary V “give give give ask” thing.
(yes i know Gary V is comical)
When I decide to contribute to a project, I do it for personal use or I am very much in line with the principles and I do it out of pure love.
As I ask for contributions I start to feel responsible and I don't want that.
I'm currently involved in 2 projects and nobody knows it's me.
Sent you 9 sats. Hopefully that will cover you for September 💜🫂
The world says never.
I say once a week!
Negotiate or be like Satoshi
The rate at which pay is given is not so important. Can be in minutes with the advent of Bitcoin since micropayments are possible without the massive overhead of banks. 1 sat per minute for instance. The better question is what's the reasonable amount to ask for. Frequency is less important. I'd even argue the more frequent the better.
I would say every time they make a significant update to the app they are working one. maybe include a zap button so its easy for the users to send sats
selfhost everything
I dont think open source devs can make enough off donations to survive. Have to be self sufficient from savings or work fiat
I also don't think it's possible
Once a week but you have to stream while you code on OnlyFans.
I guess living and beating dependent on donations is hard especially in the bear market.
P.S. but if that path is chosen then just ask annual donation
Once per month. Stay in front of people. And make it easy -- like a zap button. 🙏
wise.
the previous head of security on golang left a year or so ago to work as a full-time oss maintainer and has an interesting model for making money. https://words.filippo.io/full-time-maintainer/
