So, a question on #nostr sustainability.

As time goes on, I'm guessing #relays will accumulate more and more shared notes and information, generally. Is there any agreed form of pruning? Because otherwise I feel relays might become oversaturated quickly, won't they?

Starting a paid archival relay coupled up with the permaweb of Arweave or similar should be a good opportunity

Agree

Data storage is cheap, quick access is not. My guess is that relays will evolve to "prune" old and less relevant data, where "prune" means move it to cheaper storage that has a longer access time.

It's up to the relay operator on when and how to prune. If you want it forever, you'll likely need to run your own relay

I've been running the nostr21.com relay since December or so and it's database is only 8 gigs. When I dump it to json its only 3 gigs. Since it's all just text, I think storage prob won't be an issue for a long time.

Ohhh so you can setup a relay that only broadcast text or one that only broadcast photos?

Photos and videos are just links. So sites like nostr.build are what hosts those, not the relays themselves.

Ok ok got it

My understanding is that relays only have text. The images go to the services provider you have setup. E.g nostr.build

Oh that's way better than I expected, yeah.

There will be countless relays in the future so we will always need to update and add and subtract relays as time goes. Because ppl that are not on nostr yet come here and a lot will want to run relays thats the beauty of nostr the building will never stop. 🖖🏾💯💯
