I want to purge my following list a bit, like removing stale accounts and figuring out all of my mutual follows. Are there any tools for this I should know of before I start spending way too much time writing a script to do it myself?

my personal strategy is keep the follow list small
the addiction to constant stimulation makes you keep following people but they aren't worth it, you need to focus on your own life and making it worth talking about first... and then with a lot of followers commenting on your stuff you'll start to wonder why you followed so many
it's a real culture shock... nostr is a really different, natural social network... it's gonna take a while before it really hits home for most users even still
I keep mine small too, partially as an experiment in discovery but its also nice to have space to keep the mind clear & focus on things, when I'm not poking around to see what I can find. It's ok to get bored. That's where ideas start.
