If you want to do something potentially hazardous on your PC (ex. downloading torrents) it's a good idea to do this in a virtual machine.
This way if you get a virus, it's doesn't infect your main PC
Setting up virtual machines is very easy, checkout VirtualBox, anyone can do it
But where is your sense of adventure?!
And if you want even better security/isolation use Qubes.
Have you looked into Qubes, where *everything* you do all day long is on a VM by default? They have made it so easy and smooth. Been using it for 2 years, and my only regret is that I didn't start sooner. I don't feel safe using normie Linux anymore.
