Monero could never scale to do payments without an L2 either. Blockchains do not scale.

It works now - today - for the people that need it.
Lightning also does not scale for global payments, yet people defend it. This argument makes zero sense.
When talking about payments (not SoV), if something works well today, why do you care it does not scale infinitely?

Custodians that fail to be interoperable on lightning will not get far, i think that’s a pretty meaningful difference

Interesting opinion, you could be right actually. Although i still say the need to be interoperable with real lightning is a de facto practical check on custodians’ integrity, to some degree at least. If the ONLY available options were custodial lightning, you’d be correct for sure
Custodial LN is so easy and works perfectly. Who cares if there is trust as a trade off for fast / instant / near-free txs when 99.95% of an individuals wealth is protected behind impenetrable encryption that can’t be rugged.

What you're saying is also true. It still doesn't change the fact that custodians don't scale Bitcoin. It scales IOUs.
