So, canola is a seed oil? Because I typically only use that in baking recipes because it doesn't impart any flavor on the recipe. For regular food cooking, I almost exclusively use different types of olive oils.

Canola is an agricultural brand name, it's pressed rapeseed oil.

Learn something new every day! Well, as I said, I only use canola oil in baking, which I don't do very often, and only because it's flavor-neutral (I don't want my brownies tasting like olive oil). So I guess I'm good?

🤷‍♀️

i have zero opinions on what *you* should eat, but i'm an olive oil bitch and olive oil brownies sound great.

I've used mayo as an oil substitute before. It's a pretty good analog for cooking oil when baking.

how did you know i was also a mayo bitch?

I got that trick frokm my mom. She'd be whipping up a batch of brownies and realize she was out of vegetable oil. After a minute of cursing, she'd break out the mayo and swear me to secrecy. I could never taste the difference.

egg and oil, it's perfect for baking! 🤯

but a lot of mayo is made with...CANOLA oooooooooo

I guess there's no winning. If that's the case, there's no reason to stress it 🤷‍♂️

i certainly wouldn't.

avocado oil is flavorless. I've used it for brownies. and it just so happens that the only mayo at my grocery store that doesn't contain sneed oil is using avocado oil. you can also use avocado oil for high temperature applications and it even comes as a cooking spray. great for waffle irons. but it would be very expensive for deep frying. I still use peanut oil for deep frying. never tried tallow or lard though.

Isn't avocado oil really expensive? Price is also a factor in which ingredients I use. I also use peanut oil for deep frying because of its tolerance for high heat. Some people use vegetable oil, but I've always used the peanut oil. I keep telling myself that I'm going to get some beef tallow for some awesome french fries, but I haven't done it yet. Given the high amount of saturated fat, I have to be careful about how often I consume tallow (family history of heart disease). Next time I'm at the store I'll grab a bottle of avocado oil and give it a shot. Is it flavor-neutral? I'm not generally a fan of avocados.

Sorry, I somehow missed the first sentence of your reply. Doh!

Its not rapeseed any more, not really. Erucic acid almost eliminated.

And its easy to grow on terrible soils with poor rainfall.

Australia, even.

You're already more in with the cool kids on Nostr than I am then :)

I cook Asian dishes with sesame oil (seeds! Boo! Hiss!), but olive for almost everything else.

Oooohhh.... That's right. I do use sesame oil in small quantities in some Asian dishes that call for it specifically because of its flavor. But I don't cook Asian more than twice a year.
