Yeah I want to try out meshtastic too but I don't know anyone else nearby who would be interested.
If everyone thinks like that we get nowhere! You can buy a set of two for emergency communications between you and a family member for example

I love the SDR for pulling down the NASA images from the space station. I've been able to get them with my antenna but it works better to use websdr.org so can follow the station around the planet.

Nice! I haven't gone down the ham rabbit hole yet but the hobby seems super interesting!
Just get one of the apps that give you the questions for the test and continually take the practice tests. When you feel you are ready go in and take the real test.
My advice is go ahead and take the general license test. The general allows access to the HF bands. They are the most fun as they propagate much further than UHF VHF.
