Curious about your opinion on fever control.

What temperature and for what duration is okay until protocol to reduce temperature needs to be implemented for children and for adults?

It is less about a number and more about how the person is doing. If the fever gets pretty high you can use a wet washcloth on the forehead to help. As nostrpunk said, "If children are consolable and able to eat, sleep, & drink then it's usually best to let it run it's course." I'd even say the eating isn't critical unless things go for several days.

Thanks for that insight. We have done wash cloths, they help a-lot. My primary concern is really the possibility of brain “damage” caused by the onset of high fever for an extended period of time. I’m sure there are studies out there on this, but I have not looked into them yet.

It is theoretically possible, but so exceedingly unlikely, that it isn't really something to worry about. If the fever gets that high, the kid will be near unresponsive and needs to be taken to the hospital immediately. I think that is something like 106 F.

Our pediatrician shook us out of this cycle.

The way he put it "treat the patient not the fever".

He said there is no cross the board number for "too hot". If children are consolable and able to eat sleep & drink then it's usually best to let it run it's course.

As a general rule I don't take temperature lowering medicine (or pain relievers in general). The one exception is if I have a very high fever and can't sleep. I figure that getting some sleep is more important than the fever, but I only take it at bedtime so I can get some rest, and allow the fever to return in the morning if my body thinks it is needed. A low fever isn't sufficient to stop sleep, so I don't take anything under that situation.

That’s my tactic normally. Are we saying we shouldn’t do that?

I think that is fine. It is eliminating the fever entirely that causes the big problems. I figure getting no sleep hurts my immune system more than not having a fever.

At what point should one intervene with a fever? Is there a temp or a number of days that it is good to try to bring down the fever?

As long as your temp is under 107 you are safe

So should I stop using paracetamol and ibuprofen when feeling crap? I don’t use that much but would pop a few if I was feeling lousy

Great! First heard about this here: https://youtu.be/sP65st24crc 👍✨
