From today, it is officially legal again for US persons to use Tornado Cash – But that doesn't mean that the Government's witch hunt on privacy services is over.

Announcing the reversal of sanctions, the Treasury Department issued a warning for US persons engaging with privacy services that may be used by North Korea.

According to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, "securing the digital asset industry from abuse by North Korea and other illicit actors is essential to establishing U.S. leadership and ensuring that the American people can benefit from financial innovation and inclusion."

The sanctions on Tornado Cash were lifted under the current interpretation of IEEPA, while the judges found that Congress may choose to amend the Act to cover sanctions against privacy software if it deems fit.

The Treasury is pissed, and that is not a good sign.

"We're going to make it legal to use, just so long as people don't use it."

If something is legal to use, it should also be required to FOSS EVERYTHING about it.

That's my opinion on the matter.

Since there seems to be some misconceptions on this, the TC sanctions reversal has nothing to do with Samourai Wallet. Samourai Wallet was not placed on OFAC's SDN list, and the developers have not been charged with sanctions evasion.
