my question for #sats

so this is all meant to be privacy respecting, etc.., but how do you get sats other than buying it with a debit/credit card? (ignoring being zapped.)

if someone was so inclined to get your personal data (a Gov for example) cant they just contact large suppliers and find where your card was used?

(I don’t care about this stuff, just a Q as I’m exploring nostr atm)

Do a private deal. Or collect the dust from old wallets..

My first ever crypto was bought with a gift card trade on locals

You asked the question because you care to know. Don't hide it that's the type of indoctrination that the goverment teaches you. But to answer your question the answer is yes because a company will comply by law.

No I don’t really care. I have a primal lightning wallet set up, to do that I had to put in my email etc.. if I cared I wouldn’t have. Just wanted to know, since it’s ironic that people go around saying how Nostr is so free-speech oriented and privacy-respecting, and sure whilst better than its peers, it’s still got these “points of failure”.

Who says Nostr has anything to do with privacy?

It's quite the opposite, nearly everything is very public, and available for anyone to data-scrape.

If you didn't you never would have taken the time to write the note. Nostr & how you get your sats are two different things one does not matter against or with the other. The other way to get sats or purchase bitcoin is with cash. Theres the https://bisq.network/ which is a site to search for traders around where you live. You give them cash they give you bits right on the spot. Skeptical sure meeting a stranger online but the traders who give the sats for your cash are mostly rich people.

The likelyhood of a trader scamming you is minimal because then their rep on bisq would be ruined & they would be an outcast.

Have you tried Bisq? I'm glad it exists, but I haven't had the guts to try it yet.

I guess this is somewhat similar to Robosats. Sellers have to put up a bond that's held until the sale is successfully completed. If the seller takes the money and doesn't deliver the sats, their bond is transferred to the buyer to cover the money they sent.

I barely know about these things. I think robosats(?)

I believe there are lots of people markets and in-person options even.

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will answer tho lol

*P2P markets

Buying in small batches P2P reduces/eliminates the damage of this.

bisq and haveno are cool

You can transfer money from your checking account to Cash App, and then use your Cash App balance to buy bitcoin. That's what I do. I'm not really concerned with total anonymity for my bitcoin purchases. My purchases are always under the reporting threshold, and I immediately move my coins to a non-custodial wallet. I won't keep my coins in the built-in exchange wallet.

Someone who wanted complete anonymity would be better off using Robosats. You can buy with Amazon eGift Cards, Tether, Zelle, or Wise. Even though some of them are KYC methods, they're just cash transfers and aren't linked with whatever you're buying.
