Why not even allow an IOS user to provide a selected language upon posting the note?
Someone proposed using an “l” tag via NIP-12 but it’s by no means a standard. Moreover, it would depend on all clients to implement what you suggested, which isn’t going to happen. My current approach above avoids these issues and works pretty effectively, with minor performance cost on the client.
Could you leave a note with a multilayered Language post and allow the client to select the filter . For the language they need or whatever?
What problem are you looking to have solved?
There are some people who are multilingual and might want to post in multiple languages for the same message. Nothing is stopping them from doing that today. Either in a single thread or as separate top-level posts.
Is it possible to have all the notes in your client translate . I’ve only been able to do them one at a time and I keep losing my place when I got back , lol, I’m sure I juts have to figure out the right way to do it
Being able to filter out, i.e., block certain languages would be also useful.

I meant in general. If I don't want to see anything in language X but I don't mind seeing all the other languages and I don't even have a preference about them, that's all I would like to have to toggle.
What’s the use case? I’m curious why one would want to hide a specific language but show another, even when they don’t understand either language? Isn’t that just promoting the arbitrary discrimination of certain demographic based on which language they speak?
I think there’s a use case for wanting to see only languages that you know. But favoring certain languages over others for reasons other than understanding the content seems odd to me. Genuinely just trying to understand.
On the contrary, I sometimes like to not see English content, for the sake of variety and because I am a glottomaniac who loves languages.
So, in my case it would be the exact opposite of what you may have thought!
For the record, I am a minority-language speaker myself and I am used to getting lots of hate from majority-language speakers just for existing and daring use my language in public. So I would see this feature precisely as a means to enhance minority language visibility.
That’s a noble use case! Their ignorance is disappointing. I’m just concerned that those same people will use the same feature to diminish minority languages indiscriminately and shut themselves and others out of the global conversation. The translate note feature helps with bridging global conversation for those who want to make the effort. It’s hard for me to be convinced that this should be implemented — but I’ll keep an open mind in case there’s feedback from more people that this is desired.
I wouldn’t mind an auto-translate selected languages option(with visible ‘this has been translated’ UX. I think the volume would still be lower than free API limits.
Might not be a bad idea. I think I want to avoid biasing against languages, though. If we’re auto-translating from one language, we should auto-translate from all of them. It should also be opt-in.
Yep. If I can’t read something I either manually click in and click translate which is just effort, or skip it (basically self-filter). I’d rather see them translated or not at all if I just don’t know that language.
But I like the global connection translators give us.
Amethyst does this (auto translations) but I believe they use google translations so the quality is poor. DeepL + auto translate would be 🔥
Yeah, Amethyst downloads language packs from Google and translates offline. I believe it’s also opt-out and assumes that you understand the languages that your keyboards are in (on top of app and system level preferred languages), which I believe is a bit overly aggressive, an incorrect assumption, and appears to have made some users upset.
I think we can use the current translation providers in Damus to auto-translate live when the setting is enabled.
Totally agree! Ended up shutting it off in Amethyst. I like this path and thanks for all your work on this.
