I lived in Sarajevo for a brief time and inbetween delicious local pilsners and Čevapi, you'll encounter the Sarajevo Rose. Here's a picture:
I recommend you google it and then watch this excellent music video from right before the war broke out and think about how fragile civilization is:

“Every society is three meals away from chaos” is a quote by Vladimir Lenin. The phrase suggests that societies are always close to anarchy, no matter how civilized they may seem.
It's true and so we should be vigilant and jealously guard our freedoms and civilization preserving traditions.
I once visited Mostar, and it was kind of surreal walking over the reconstructed bridge.
The battle scars were everywhere.
It's a beautiful place and I'm glad they restored the bridge. There is video of the bridge being destroyed, which is not fun. Stari Most literally means old bridge, btw, which is fun. It's been over a decade since I've been but what was really hopeful is while apartment buildings still are covered in battle scars, the insides are often very well renovated and beautiful and comfortable. What an incredible place Bosnia and the greater Balkan area
Yes. I remember seeing the destruction in the news.
It is a beautiful part of the world. I too hope to go back one day. 🧡
While I was there my mentor/professor came out to visit to see how my trip was going and we basically just rented a car and went out into the rural areas away from the city and got lost on some dirt roads. We found a middle-aged shepard walking along with his AK-47 tending his sheep and I stumbled through some bosnian to try to find our way back on the map. At the end, I shook is hand and, I'm already not a big guy, but this was the biggest hand I've ever shook in my life. It was intense, and then my hand smelled like sheep for the rest of the day. It's a weird thing but it's seared into my brain.
It was a beautiful city. I was there in 2003. I don’t think there was a single building that didn’t have at least one bullet hole. I remember many looking like blocks of Swiss cheese.
Many still looked that way in 2012 even with all the Saudi/Emerati money that came flowing in. I would so love to go back and see how it looks now. I loved living there.
