I’m a millennial and I’ve been told my entire life that I probably won’t receive social security benefits, yet I’m still forced to pay into it… and boomers demand that they get theirs as they currently hit retirement. “Hands off our SS”

Lol. Lmao even.

And they call us lazy or mean spirited for being rightfully upset with them as they benefit from the system that sinks us 🤬

I thought you understood my "divide and conquer" reply on this topic a few days ago. Now you buying into it?

I can understand a divide and conquer strategy. I can also be annoyed at people who are adamant that I cripple myself financially to keep them comfortable while they berate me. These things are not mutually exclusive.

The boomers aren't the ones taking your SS though.

It's like blaming your neighbor because the mafia returned some of they money they stole. Your neighbor didn't take your money, the mafia did.

If that is the situation and my neighbor is also mocking me for being lazy and poor and a number of other character flaws then the neighbor is still a dick. I'm blaming the them for how they behave to me about the situation because that is within their control.

I can both complain about the mafia and my dick headed neighbor. I choose to spend my time not doing that for the most part, but if someone else is I might chime in like, yep, the mafia sucks and wouldn't it be nice if the neighbors weren't dicks.

Which is what happened in this conversation. Do you think tone policing how this conversation happens makes the neighbors less dick headed or the mafia less criminal or makes the folks who are complaining feel heard or helps them not be taken advantage of by the mafia or dick headed neighbors? Why do you feel compelled to do so, what is the utility here?

I'm not sure I understand the large sentence in your last paragraph, and that seems to be what the final questions are related to. I'll answer them, but you'll have to clarify that paragraph for me.

People being jerks is one thing. With a neighbor like that, it makes sense to quit interacting with them, regardless of their generation.

The argument that I frequently see is "Boomers are taking my money because they want SS paymemts.", so that's the context I was flying under. Being bitter that they had better conditions is the second most common beef I see expressed, and it's rather pointless, and still not their doing.

Buying into the generational-war psyop pulls people away from basic logic while they get wrapped up in labels, and start pasting them around. It also creates a victim identity for both sides. The same energy could be used for better things.

Ok, then I think you had an argument ready for a response that wasn't mine. I wasn't making any of those arguments I was pointing out that they're often very rude. Maybe a vlog or your own post to advocate those points would be great.

Good luck with your social security checks I hope you enjoy them 😅

Your reply seemed to support the OP. I didn't realize you were having your own conversation in their thread.

🙄

Infuriating. Openly stealing from us.

So don't pay.

I’m a wagie, I don’t have a choice

🤬

Gen X here. Been saying for years I would opt out right now with no “benefits” at all. They can keep the stolen money. But I am out

Have fun paying welfare to people who had a chance to acumulate wealth their entire life, while your net worth is 0. This is the system.

I am also a millenial and I have been told my entire life that I must pay into the system, else my retirement payment will be super low. Guess how much I am paying into the ponzi 🤪.

You'll get social security when your 80, but your monthly check will be worth about as much as a bag of groceries.

Fingers crossed we can afford groceries!🤞

Agreed. I gave the bullish case for social security. The bearish case is much worse.

I think things will fall apart before they even think about cutting our checks 😅

So do I, but I think it's just begining to fall apart and I think the stablecoins might let them kick the can down the road for a little while. Time can only tell.

If it's bad that the boomers want their money back, instead of just giving it up, then why complain that you are going to give yours up?

Didn’t say it’s bad for them to want their return. I would want the money too if I were them. I do want mine.

The difference is boomers paid in with the expectation of a certain return at retirement.

Millennials pay in knowing that we will never see that money again, or if we do, the purchasing power will buy a bag of chips.

What was the purpose of writing that they demand their money, and "hands off our SS"? with "lmao" at the end?

If boomers aren't part of the issue, then why mention them at all?

I assumed it wouldn't be there for me when I was in high school in the 80's. That was just my own assumption from observation, not from any headlines or anything.

As I got older, I realized that the modern US is always at a deficit, and the Fed can print money, so there is no reason for SS checks to not be issued.

Every generation has complained that the checks they receive will be of a "same dollar amount, but lesser value". That's nothing new.

Does this mean your original note was the equivalent to "They weren't fed fear porn about their money, and I am!"?

Boomers are a huge part of the issue and to pretend they aren't is to delude yourself.

I am x-gen I paid the minimum I could. I will never ask to retire. I will work till my last day and I expect my children will take care of me. The government should not even know when I die.
