Interesting.

Are nickels next?

"The cost to mint a US nickel is currently around 8.52 cents per coin, according to the US Mint's 2022 annual report. This is higher than the face value of the coin, which is 5 cents. The main reason for this discrepancy is the high cost of the metals used to make nickels, particularly nickel and copper."

How long until Sats replace coinage?

Definition of “shitcoin”

Monopoly money costs more than zero to produce, even though it is literally worthless as well...maybe instead of gold, we back the dollar with acres of national forest. 🤷‍♂️

It's held its value over time far better than the USD has too

Monopoly money I mean

lol. This can’t be real

I’ll guess two places past the decimal (hundredths) is removed from pricing.

Just my two Ents

The opposing army of old farts have 20y+ ahead of them. Don't expect drastic changes soon. Also newcomers will be blinded by the money printer and can easily curate the same war on sats.

they'd better be next

Yup. Take down the pennies and the nickels. Waste of money and then we don't have to suffer the retarded 99¢ pricing bullshit.

In Switzerland we removed the 1 cent coin about 20 years ago, in the end it was not accepted by most shops and cost 12 cents to produce as it was only produced in small quantities. But we still have the 5 cents, accepted in every shops but often refused by vending machines (most coin acceptors can train 6 type of coins, while we have 7 between 5CHF and 5 cents, the lower value coin is often dropped).

The 5 cents coin now cost more or less its face value to get produced, depending on metal cost variation.

At the time it was considered to drop the 5 cents as well but it was refused as the main concern would be that the basic stamp for a mail would increase from 85cents to 90 cents. We still have the 5 cents but the cheapest stamp increased 3 years ago from 85 to 90 and again from 90 to 1.00CHF last year. So now we could drop the 5 cents coin as we got rekt by the postal services anyway.

La miglior cosa è che non avete €uro!!! …un cancro

Beware if this "waste cutting" progresses to all physical cash
