BECAUSE 'SPECIAL' RELAYS CENSOR. FREEDOM IS EVERYWHERE, OR NOWHERE.
I think freedom of speech also includes freedom of moderation. Everyone is free to speak on Nostr, but we do not have to be forced to listen to everyone. While I truly believe in freedom of speech the uprising of bots and ai complicates things a bit.
I think moderation is always up to the user, but if you have a group of people who are just going after the bots and ai flooding nostr with bullshit, zap farming, agendas, and wild propaganda. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it has to be a calculated decision.
It is more like relays are like bars. Where some are friendly places where everyone knows your name. While others are biker bars where there are fights every night. Where you get a bottle smashed over your head every now and again that ends in really bad headaches.
Personally, I am still figuring out the whole relay situation. I don't know the good ones from the bad ones. I need more educational resources to make educated decisions.
You have to pay to subscribe, unless you were grandfathered in, with the first group. It's 300 sats/month. Which is not much, only about 25 euro-cents, but it's enough to keep out the bots.
Bots don't like to pay for subscriptions, because you can throw them off and keep the money, and then they have to spin up a new npub and pay again and again...
This works because I manually curate the feed and nostr:npub10npj3gydmv40m70ehemmal6vsdyfl7tewgvz043g54p0x23y0s8qzztl5h maintains the servers, of course. Some really would pay and just see how long they can get away with it, before someone notices, but I stalk my own relay.
