Sir, Nostr is not a layer 3. I will die on this hill.
Nostr is an Information Layer 1, using a Capital Layer 2 (Lightning Network) as a payment system for zaps.
Bitcoin’s L3 is a messaging layer for L2s. The L3 should be open, permissionless and decentralized. Nostr is a Bitcoin L3.

Nostr isn't built in Bitcoin or Lightning and doesn't need Bitcoin or Lightning. It doesn't have to utilize them at all!

It's a lot more than a Bitcoin L3, but that doesn't mean its not a Bitcoin L3... of course need L2s to implement NWC or else its not.
NWC is more of a layer 3 than Nostr itself 🤣

But whatever it's called, the more important part is that Nostr/NWC enables one click, multiparty bitcoin payments which is a huge UX leap to the way traditional bitcoin payments works today and can make bitcoin payments an actually better experience than traditional payments.
I think it’s cool to think of nostr as a bitcoin L3 and while I’m not a very technical person both of you got rewarded sats for this conversation so that seems to suggest bobs right.. also you say it doesn’t need lightning with nostr but now that we’ve discovered it I think we do need it..
I use nostr to send Bitcoin therefore nostr is L1.

While nostr doesn’t “need” bitcoin, it thrives on the same ethos. If you’re a bitcoiner, chances are you’re a nostr-er. I don’t think the reverse works as new nostr-people are looking for freedom from (social media) censorship.

These are fiat points and I preach and speak that Bitcoin and Nostr have beautiful symbiotic relationshis. It's one of the key points of my talks that I give at conferences. I also state that they don't need one another, but when they do work together, they're unstoppable, because we can't truly transact until we can truly communicate. That said, for Nostr to be consider a layer, it has to be built upon a previous layer. That's how layers work. Nostr is not built in Lightning. It's a separate tool.
