“we have informed the Government that we have made the difficult decision that when the law takes effect we will be removing links to Canadian news from our Search, News, and Discover products and will no longer be able to operate Google News Showcase in Canada.”
Let’s be honest though, the “news” they parade as “news” is anything but.
It’s pure propaganda.
Holy shit.
Save us from the imbeciles in charge up here.
did you know its Canada day this weekend?
Ouch
This will be reversed. They need google more than google needs them.
Nobody needs google. They need ad revenue to survive. I haven’t used Google in years.
Yes, we have alternatives to google, but google is still the biggest driver of traffic.
Their ad revenue directly correlates with their traffic.
Unless the news site has an established brand with loyalty and people go to the site directly (like New York Times), these sites will take a huge hit while google directs that traffic elsewhere.
Again, they need google more than google needs them.
Kinda ballsy imo
Like a soft core version of “Google leaving China”?
Technology continues to outpace legacy institutions. “The old world is dying, and the new world struggles to be born.”
I guess I will be coming to Nostr for all my Canada News. Lots of Canadians here….
I guess I will be coming to Nostr for all my Canada News. Nothing on Google anymore. It’s like Canada does not exist. #canada #google #news #nostr #damus

Because legislators are voted into position, their only proven qualification is an ability to persuade people to vote for them. They don't necessary have good negotiation skills. In this case, I believe the legislators took a clearly adversarial position against Google and not being good negotiators thought that strong-arming Google by rejecting all of Google's suggestions and just forcing them to pay was going to work. Instead, Canadians will be directed to overseas news agencies and their local news industry will rapidly wither. Mistakes are a great way to learn.
It shuts the country out from the world - would have made sense if it was some authoritarian state, but for free market, its going to hurt.
Also true on so many other aspects - random person who spent years convincing a selected group of people to get him/her to power will now decide on health policies, education, military and more that can radiate globally, that the person has no expertise or wide range of knowledge to begin with.
If you think about it, everybody is quite equal to each other, its the governments that differentiates how healthy / advanced / rich or poor the people are

Why does anyone use Google search or news? Time to take the big corporations down
#NostrNews for Canadians. Post news articles and tag it so we can see outside the bubble.
Not there yet but give it a couple months.
Big tech can EAFD.
Jack. Cool tech. I am new here.
I notice too that you really like BTC but I wonder why you are not so fun of EVM tech?
One of the cool use case are domains!
And a cool use case would be to use .nostr domains to replace this address: "npun1... Etc" that are basically impossible to remember.
.eth and .crypto are great examples of this.
Hello world.
@JustinTrudeau invoke emergency powers, isolate Canadians from then internet, block their bank accounts, decide what people should and should not eat or inject in their bodies. Canadians needs to follow the french riots on the street. Is time the public take actions rather then fight on social media.
Too many soy lattes over the years?
Nooooo. You don't get it.
That's just a foot-gun by the gov.
They wanted to use propaganda.... now google and meta are like.... No propaganda for you !
it's actually a good thing.
This is great news. The final nail in th coffin to end CBC.
Independent journalism will flourish.
yeah we’ve been talking about this for a while. 100% Trudeau’s fault
old media is near dead anyway
😬
Canada used to be a nice place. If Canadians don't get rid of their awful government soon it may never recover from its slide into totalitarian leftism. Alberta could secede and apply to become the 51st state. I think we'd let them in.
Canada (the federal government) is battling two particular tech companies to charge them money for linking to Canadian News sites.
This is bizarre and doesn't seem like a good solution --> so now Google is posturing to just completely filter out/cut off ANY and ALL Canadian news. 😳
So, as a Canadian, if I go to Google for their news feed, I will only get Canadian news from... non Canadian journals and companies?
Am I understanding this correctly?
This is what happens when GAFA think they are superior to the States 😒. They want money from pub, but don't want to pay to use contents. There is clearly an abuse of dominant position. Long live decentralized social networks. It now remains to democratize them and make them easy to use for ordinary mortals.
I can’t help feeling that making news unavailable is not a clumsy buproduct, but the entire point of C-18.
