In the matrix, why go through the pain of simulating suffering?

This is arguing “no pain, no gain”?
I understand it as we wouldn't know good without bad, but I'm tapping out.
I can have a sense of bad from reading a story or watching a movie. I can simulate it.
I've been reading a lot about bioelectricity and have learned that science can stimulate regeneration in animals like frogs which don't have regeneration abilities naturally (like salamanders). But the way they do it is through pain. So there are all these experiments like, cut off this frogs leg and keep the wound in a salt bath and agitate it every day and the leg will grow back.
Idk if I were the frog if I'd like this, like great my leg is back now all it took is pain and suffering instead of peace and healing. But it is an answer to this question isn't it? Why go through the pain of simulated suffering? Maybe we're trying to grow back something we've lost?
In the matrix, you have a choice to simply give the frog its leg back without the salt bath. Are we saying we need to trick the frog into thinking it has gone through some sort of proof-of-work?
Correct. When the first matrix was perfect, humans rejected it. I think if we could just give the frog back it's leg without the salt bath, it would reject it as a foreign object.
Perhaps through pain is how we integrate experiences to grow?
