Who wants to help me set up umbrel on a proxmox server? I'm stuck at trying to get a Linux VM to read the friggin thumb drive since I umbrel won't install via command line anymore. πŸ˜’

Did you pass the drive through to the VM?

I am not sure how to do that. I thought I did. But I don't know how to be sure.

Do you have a terminal in the VM? If so run β€˜lsblk’ in the VM and see if your drive is there. Post output if you like.

I'll do that when I get home, or, if I remember...

Okay ping me and will help you out

Thank you.

Srry…I fat fingered the like sign…ur request is way above my pay gradeπŸ€·πŸ½β€β™‚οΈ

No worries! 😁

How am I supposed to get the iso on a bare VM without it being on a drive?

In Proxmox UI if you go to your VM there should be an option to mount an .iso to the virtual disk drive

Yes. But... I still can't mount the thumb drive with the iso for some reason.

PUT THE THUMB DRIVE DOWN. You don’t need it. Download the ISO to your machine. Go to Proxmox UI and add it to the virtual disk drive there

πŸ‘€

If I can get it connected to the internet... Sure?

No, wait... I do have it connected to the network... So... I can try that.

Did you get it working?

I just got home from work. Gonna eat then mess with it. Thank you for checking!

No worries. Wish I was still using Proxmox so I could do you some screenshots. I have done Umbrel in a VM on Proxmox before so it's definitely doable!

I know it is, but the only way I found to do it easily for an idiot like me is now defunct. Umbrel killed their web install for some annoying reason. πŸ™„

Yeah can't believe they got rid of the web install!

I don't understand why. πŸ˜‘

I'm installing linux today on a laptop. How important is it to verify the ISO ? It looks like i have to download yet another software to open up the software to verify!

Has anyone downloading and verifying linux actually found out that it's a fishy version?

If you are downloading the iso from a fairly reliable sight, it's not a big deal.

You should learn how to check checksums, though.

Okay... I don't know how to do step 2 in the above link. πŸ˜…

So you have a VM created in Proxmox already yes?

The screengrab below is from a random YT video. When you click on your VM on the left you and then go to "Hardware" you should see a CD Drive. Double click that to attach the .iso you've downloaded from Umbrel. Restart the VM and then it should boot with the Umbrel ISO

Let's see if I can manage that...

I'm about to hit the hay but if you're still having issues in the morning maybe we can set up some kind of screenshare or chat to get it sorted πŸ‘

You're well ahead of me as I'm on the east coast of the US and leave for work at 0530... But, you've pointed me in the right direction and I'll set if I can muddle my way through.

And I still haven't gotten zapping working on my me phone yet... Once I do, I'll hit you up!

I... Nuked the proxmox server.

I swear I really shouldn't try to do stuff like this at all.

Wait... No. It's still there... I just can't remember the effing password to the proxmox server.

πŸ™„

Hah! I wrote it down. I'm in. And, well... Still lost.

πŸ˜‚ why are you choosing Proxmox? What’s your goal besides getting Umbrel going?

Because I do need to run software in windows and occasionally and would prefer to have the ability to run windows in a VM for security and privacy purposes.

Gotcha, that makes sense. So you don't have a dedicated machine you could just put Umbrel on?

I don't like dedicated machines for several reasons.

I did get umbrel installed, but, they're are some issues that need to be worked out.

Another nostrich helped figure out that the VM bios was set for secure boot, which prevented installing. πŸ™„

Glad you got it installed. If you need anything else always feel free to drop me a message

I will need help figuring out how to get umbrel working properly eventually. So... Do expect to hear from me. πŸ˜…

No problem πŸ˜‚

Did you get my PM like a month ago?

I belive I can help...

Oh! Yes. I did. πŸ˜…

I would say forget about Umbrel and install TrueNAS, but I have a bias... :-)

Why do you prefer TRUENAS.

I have over 15 years long history with It. I used it before it even had ZFS support... Right now it is the most stable and mature storage system. Enterprise grade stuff. Look into TrueNAS SCALE I think you will not be disappointed. The only downside is that it needs a beefier specs than the other options... But if you have a Proxmox server I guess that it shouldn't really be a problem.

I have a 1L Lenovo that is pretty beefy.

I'm not sure that TrueNAS will run everything I would like to run, though. I also, sort of unfortunately, already have a QNAP NAS. I wish I'd never spent the money on that... Oh well.

1L Lenovo as the mini pc? I'm really interested in what you want to run. Because if it can run in a container or in a VM it can run on TrueNAS.

Yes.

*sighs*

I want to run umbrel for it supposedly being a good way to run a bunch of things that I want to utilize with supposedly click-to-install ease.

I could just run umbrel directly on the tinyPC... But, I have made my life more difficult since I thought I could run proxmox to run various VMs for other purposes without needing a billion separate raspis. (I irrationally dislike raspis. But also... One tinyPC is actually more e Li ectrically efficient than a bunch of them, and it is also much more powerful and upgradable.)

So I'm trying to get umbrel to install on a VM that I set up on proxmox but I can't figure out how to pass a thumb drive through and reboot the VM to install umbrel.

I also can't figure out how to pass through an iso image.

And more the VM refuses to reboot. WTF!

I share the almost irrational suspicion towards Raspberries too. In the past I built a project on it and it was nothing but issue next to another issue...

Electricity consumption is a also a good point.

Here is a build i did years ago...

https://youtu.be/QyciaJ91EFs

Very impressive build!

And yeah. I have used a couple, but... I'm not really impressed with them. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Yeah those were the times of hand building... Nowadays I would just go get used Supermicro server and call it a day. Comparable power consumption, significantly beefier, with build in redundancies and sturdy construction. It is a bit lazy, but I guess that is the old and balding me... :-)

No, it's just sensible at this point. Time is precious as long as you've got enough fiat to leverage for shortcuts, that's a good thing.

Lol. Just wish to inform you that I'm watching this discussion VERY intently 😁.
