I can't believe I'm asking this, but...does anyone know of a good learn Microsoft Excel tutorial/ series? Like, by the end of it you could confidently say you are proficient in Excel when applying for bullshit jobs...?

There's quite a few videos, on is 12 hours long. No idea if it's good or not. If anyone has done this before and can recommend one that would be very useful lol.

My heart goes out to you. I wish I could help, but I use LibreOffice Calc vs Excel. Pretty much the same thing, but is free and open source with a lot of educational resources.

Just thinking about using microsoft product just made my stomach churn. Hope everything works out for you.

Is libreoffice calc useable if I follow along with an Excel tutorial. I realise I also don't even have excel lol

From what I understand and remember it is very similar. I would use the calc tutorials. For if you master calc you can export it into Microsoft formats. Then impress the hiring manager by saying that while yes, you can use excel, but did you know you could save your company a lot of money by switching to LibreOffice instead?

It is used by many governments, hospitals, non profits, and savings savy companies around the world.

Unless you're doing linking between sheets on varied drives, you really don't need to worry much about it.

I literally don't know the basics lol and everyone asks for it.

Just use it a little bit

Think of some calculations that would take a while to do by hand and use LibreOffice and Excel to do them. Look up how to do each part you get stuck at.

I couldn't give advice without mentioning LibreOffice because the cooler boss will hire you for that instead of Excel and they're basically the same thing, pretty sure you can even copy and paste between them, so it's easy to practice with one while practicing with the other.

Bonus points if you make a graph out of whatever data you're messing with at the end.

If you can't think of anything to try, you could look for any infographic out there that's outdated or missing something and try remaking it. A lot of them also have csv data available, like the crypto comparison chart I posted a while ago (I made with libreoffice instead of excel but still csv)

Save the deeper studying with YouTube instructors etc for after you get hired by someone who's gonna have you using excel all the time

Lol look I don't even know how to make the text fit inside columns, or stop things from auto correcting etc etc. I literally know nothing about excel. I think I'm allergic to it in fact

That suggests you'll hate working with it so much, it might be worth missing out on job opportunities by focusing on LibreOffice or something else 🤙

Everyone asks for the accursed thing lol. Except for like washing dishes. And that isn't going to pay the rent.

You might still be better off with looking up single steps you're stuck at, like making the text fit in boxes

Those basic things being difficult is probably why they ask everyone to know the basics, but you probably don't need more than those basics to get hired

Probably LinkedIn lol

Not really willing to pay tbh lol, I think there is more than enough on youtube for my uses (trying to get a shitty job that pays ME lol)

yes there are plenty on youtube, also there are plenty of ud3my torrents on p1r4t3b4y if you dont wanna spend money lol

I have no help, just moral support. Thinking about using excel (and any product like it) makes me want to cry.

This isn't even the worst part, I'm putting off CV writing, job search, interviews (if that even happens lol). And the best case scenario is even worse, I get a job where I have to use excel.

#fml3 lol

I learned a lot by getting chucked into the deep end early at a job. Was given a busted model/spreadsheet-maze and had to fix it. In just a couple of hours I’d learned a lot of stuff!

And, while I get the icky sentiment, it’s really not bad at all. Excel is super simple, powerful, and useful 😃

So, maybe grab a workbook out there that does something moderately interesting and see if you can repurpose or modify it in some small way.

I wouldn't even know where to find one.

I've only just learnt today how to auto adjust the columns and use the sum lol.

I suppose it's different if you're in a scenario where you have to do something and you can just Google it on your way.

Unless you're sitting next to someone who you told in the interview that you knew how to use excel lolol.

This gives me an idea.

Don’t bother learning it now. Just lie on your resume and move on to the next steps 🧠 . You’re smart, and you’ll cram it in IF/WHEN you need it. It is easy, that much I can assure you

And hope no one can see my screen 😏

I think I've learnt some basics from a couple of videos just today lol. Enough to say that I know the basics without my cracking a smile during an interview 😏.

Have the problem is battling the thoughts of 'i literally don't give a fuck about this pointless job, just walk out the interview/don't even apply in the first place/ don't turn up to the interview' lolol

This is really useful, thanks

I saw this and was going to tag you until I realized you boosted it 😂

Just watched it from beginning to end 😅👍🏼

It gets quite advanced. Probably way more than any of the stupid jobs I'm applying for would require lol.

The guy is the CEO of stack overflow. Which I don't really know, but it's something I see mentioned on noste a lot.

.

It's almost like a stand up comedy show tho

🤣 It was! What I do know is that I don’t want a job that depends on excel. 😅

No, same. It more stupid jobs that ask for excel knowledge. I just need to learn some basics, so I'm not bullshitting too much. Cos I'm already bullshitting a lot in other areas, like pretending I even care about the stupid company and stupid job role in the first place. Lolcry

Totally. I left the world of work a few years ago but thinking I should do something again. I can’t do that bullshitting anymore. Need something more real. What I call a “doing job.” Work for myself again.

I think I would actually like a library job tho. Not that it pays well.

Perhaps you would like some nature reserve type thing? I don't know:)🤔

There’s lots I would like. Probably would have to volunteer now to get a foot in some of them now. My personal issue though is I like too much that I can’t seem to focus enough on one area 😅 Also looking to move location at the same time.

I quite like the idea of volunteering in my local green/nature area preservation projects, which I think would be worthwhile. (Not sure I actually have time to be unpaid tho, but I am thinking of doing it sporadically). Plus I think I would enjoy learning all the propagation, plant/tree care etc etc stuff.

Maybe I might even enjoy a spreadsheet of it was about trees and plants lol

Yep definitely! 🙂

Library job sounds ok.

Pay is kinda shite, and despite this they're actually highly sought after lol 🥲

Pay has been shit for so long in so many jobs it’s an utter joke now. What’s the national UK average these days? I think it’s changed only by a few thousand pounds in the last 20 years or so when it should be 3x more if it were to match the cost of living/rent/house prices etc. Bonkers.

There's also just not very much going. It feels like everyone I know is in/under-employed and looking for work, but not finding it. It's felt like a recession for a while now, but because people are *technically* employed it doesn't really show up lol.

All the books are cooked, the car is on fire, and there's no driver at the wheel lolol

This is why I left the UK for 6 years and worked abroad. Coming back and it certainly feels as you describe.

Librarians are consistently some of the most interesting people to chat with

Nice little refresher. Relative and absolute is the thing I’d forgotten about (haven’t used excel in ages!). Stumbled upon stack overflow but only read it for answers (don’t contrib). I don’t even quite get GitHub either (not a dev really).

Don’t ever get into a software dev job. The amount of shit you need to search up every day would make you quit

tl;dr learn as you go, it’s not as advanced

There's absolutely no chance of me doing anything that well paid lol
