Damus’ new “who to follow” feature is as offensive as YouTube or Netflix or Amazon’s watch recommendations. Algorithms that guide thought inhibit personal exploration, and consolidate opinions into a unified groupthink. This is the proof of stake model…those who have the most (dollars or followers) encourage governing algorithms to boost their product selectively over the products of others.

Stop crying. Don't use it!

I don't understand why creators working on onboarding are so focused on "people to follow".

New users would be better off following topics/hashtags they're interested in. After that, they will be able to find people with something in common.

What might be more useful is a 'discover similar accounts' option? Yes still algorithmic but leaves the control with the user. I find similarweb to be a useful tool for internet research.
