I remember having a 6 digit phone number as a kid in Mexico. That how small my town was.
The US used to have 5 digit numbers and then in the 1940s they added letters at the beginning to expand them. So if your number was 8-5409 you’d be given a prefix based on where you lived. In NYC if you lived in Murray Hill you’d get MH7-5409. Later it would just be written as 647-5409 but I knew older people who still only referred to it with the letter codes.
Oops MH8-5409
This system of telephone numbering was known as the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), which was first implemented in 1947.
Early phreakers used to be able to make the click sounds the systems listened for to spoof long distance dialing codes. Usually it required audio equipment but I seem to remember hearing stories about people who could just make them using their mouths.

It’s true!! 😂😂
phone numbers are retarded, can't believe they are still a thing
momentum carries so much fucking weight...
I still remember my childhood number. Sometimes banks ask for it as a security question. Lame-ass boomer 2FA. 🤣
😂
fuck, I just tried and I also remember my childhood number; whoa, haven't thought about that number in literally decades
the brain is so incredible
Can be used for passwords🤷♂️😁
Yeah, I have a whole password format in my head that’s easier than using a password generator and it involves a specific sequence of letters, numbers, and punctuation along with a unique identifier for the website I’m using. I tested it in a password security checker and it said it was virtually impossible to brute-force.
I used to do the same, the problem with algorithm-based passwords is that one website leak is all it takes, an algorithm a human can compute mentally will be trivially crackable
the password strength checker can't know this so I'd disregard that (i.e. a single instance of that password algorithm is strong, but one leak and all your other passwords are trivially crackable)
passwords are also stupid anyway 😂
Fair enough, I’ll probably have to get better at it.
What's the non-european way? I'm asking for real
