Nice. Switzerland will now require government agencies to use open source software.

That's actually bad ass.

do U know how much Bitcoin is in the underground vaults in Switzerland? i looked but not the best researcher. t-y

6 ounces

Freedom Fren in Switzerland to keep all eyes on what's happening with their government

#BTC #Zap⚔#Nostr #JulianAssangeIsFree šŸ”„šŸš€

Great! I wished they'd do this in Germany too.

A government being sensible is such a mind fuck.

is this in response to the recent Microsoft issue or something that has been in the works for a while?

bigger picture imo

And the rest of the EU is apparently trying to get rid of funding for open source projects.

Switzerland is not part of the EU

Wen USA?

So,šŸ¤”, they will not use casa šŸ˜

Guess they will have to ditch whatever they're using for money.

That is cool AF

Very interesting

I work with the Canadian province Alberta - and open source is strongly enouraged - tho we're not as far it as requiring it the way Switzerland did

Conflicted. FOSS is the way. But man, if the government is mandating it, might opt to illegally run close source.

Wait a minute… are they playing 4D chess… fuck.

It's just for gov agencies. Private individuals/companies are free to use whatever they want.

Not all the jokes land. šŸ˜‚

This is massive !

still feels that my government wants the best for its members of the public and it shows it in ā€œlittleā€ things like that.

direct democracy is key for swiss to maintain not being ruled by authority/elites and it helps lots finding best solutions in everything for everybody instead of feeding the chosen few. looking at our neighbours it feels like democracy has failed, but due to our direct democracy with people’s vote directly influencing decisions there are just better solutions find in many ways. and as we participate we accept political decisions more and don’t always complain about the powers that be.

interesting thing would be to deeply study difference btw models of democracy in switzerland and for example germany and its impacts on society/life. i tell you they are huge and you see it e.g. in forward solutions like the new open source law in switzerland instead of all the restrictive measures taken by EU regarding same issues

Wow this is great, I hope they use stable versions so they don't have bad experience with testing branches

That's a good thing, but not really new, software made by our governement was already open source in most cases (voting app, covid app 🤮, tax app,...) but don't get missleading, they still massively use closed source for everything not in house developped.

This year, in our local school, they give every kids from 8 year old an iPad tight to an AppleID and Microsoft account. And the first computer class are still on iOS or Windows, teaching kids to use Microsoft Office and browse web with Chrome 🤮🤮🤮.

We still have a long way to go.

Is there a complimentary policy that involves something like an endowment fund that pays for open source development?

My concern is this will be used to justify tightening regulations on who can contribute to open source, like they will require licensing for devs because now government is dependent on it and we can't have any terrorist writing code for the government, or some similar BS reasoning.

That’s incorrect. The law states than any Federal agency developing software (in house or outsourced) must publish the software as open source using internationally recognized licenses (see article 9). It also contains provisions for Open data (article 10). It’s a step into the right direction, but falls short quite a bit since this only applies to the Federal government and not the cantons or municipalities. Those can chose for themselves what software and systems to use and how.
