There is something dark about anime. Have always felt this way

There are some exceptions, particularly Hayao Miyazaki’s work, but most of it comes across as godless / soulless

I think the 7 Volumes of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind are his magnum opus

Never understood it's appeal

what have you watched that is soulless?

Does it count if I never finished Dragon Ball and it's 6 spin offs?

😆 oh dear. Dragon Ball is literally made for little kids.

You might want to look into anime that's made for a more mature audience. Of the animes that are popular right now, I'd recommend Demon Slayer or Attack on Titan. Oldies but goodies, I'd recommend Death Note or Gurren Lagann.

Death Note is the only one I finished of all of those.

Berserk was a decent one as well if you read it.

Demon Slayer and AOT are still on going series so neither have I, lol.

GL is really nutty at the end. You have to throw all logic and reason out the window and just enjoy the ride.

Agreed

I don´t think it is "something" . The problem is the characters are absolutely plain and lack any depth. Only very basic emotions are represented in a stereotypical way. As if created by artist who´ve had no interaction with the world or read classic literature. It is a product for kids and even when the plot is interesting the character development is fake and artificial
