Jumble is an interesting client that I haven't played around with much. Dev is nostr:nprofile1qy88wumn8ghj7mn0wvhxcmmv9uq3vamnwvaz7tmwdaehgu3dwfjkccte9eshqup0qqsgzfdez8ksa9xmuvqg5zly3nl9e5xqkpvj8nllj9aw06ra4pqq3qcug5u3k who also made possibly the easiest to install relay app for desktop: Nostr Relay Tray. Great guy, and really responsive, though I think his timezone is opposite of mine here in the western US, because I usually don't hear from him until the next day, and it was like 2am here when he replied. ๐Ÿ˜‚

I am definitely getting your reply. Nostr.wine is a great paid relay. I would encourage you to look into their other relay offerings as well. In particular, filter.nostr.wine, which is kind of like a personalized web-of-trust relay, that allows you to see notes from users you follow plus users they follow in your Global feed, and it pulls those notes from a variety of relays without you needing to have them in your relay list. Additionally, it blasts the notes you write out to several relays, giving you a bit better reach, without having to add all those relays to your list of outbox relays.

If you don't decide to subscribe to filter.nostr.wine, I would recommend adding a couple more popular public relays to your list of "outbox" relays. That is, the ones you write your notes to. A lot of users read from those relays, or they use a relay that pulls notes in from those relays and filters them for spam. If you only post to nostr.wine, only those who have added it as a relay they read from will see your notes, unless their client supports the outbox model, which is a whole other conversation...

I would also recommend adding a popular web-of-trust relay to the relays you read from. Something like wss://wot.utxo.one. nostr:nprofile1qy2hwumn8ghj7ct9va5hxtn4w3ux7tn0dejj7qg4waehxw309an8yetwwvh82arcduhx7mn99uqzpckv7l8jqspl8u4y54dn9rcduwlrs4v2040nxce0m2h0cunvrj8tkauy96 's web-of-trust relay is likely the most popular, because he really pioneered this relay type back when Nostr was being spam attacked late last August and early September. Web-of-trust relays only allow users within the relay owner's web-of-trust to post to them, meaning they are virtually spam free, since most folks don't intentionally follow spammers.

Great info

Yes, SUPER helpful info about the relays! Thank you!!

Make sure you have damus.io and primal.net for read and write relays those are the most popular ones everyone uses

Primal hates me. And there's no log out option now. I'm using Damus on my iPhone to get notifications, because it's the only Nostr app that works for me to get notifications. But I use my Android, not my iPhone which I was planning to sell, and I primarily work on a desktop.

I was also planning to switch to GoogleOS from iMac because Apple isn't great at handling multiple live news streams which I need for news.

For now, Coracle and Ditto are working the best for my content (breaking news including short videos uploaded via desktop) even though half of my posts are still missing.

Thank you so much to all for your help!

Have you tried: https://damus.io/notedeck? Itโ€™s damus on desktop

Yes, Damus/Notedeck is working at least as well as the rest! And is the only client that works for me to get notifications. Also, I just saw that there will be a Damus for Android. ๐Ÿ˜ป

Yes in the coming months :)

๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ YESSS FINALLY LOL ๐Ÿ˜‚

It's a great product ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Could her posts be on a relay that went dark maybe ๐Ÿค”

Using her njump.me profile to look at where it is finding her notes, it looks like a lot of them are only showing up on relay.nostr.band. If users aren't reading from that specific relay, they won't see those notes.

Anything you want to have broadly seen should probably be posted to relay.damus.io, relay.primal.net, and maybe nos.lol. Most users will have at least one of those in their read relays, or they will be using a relay that aggregates notes from one of those relays and filters for spam.

Would it be a problem if I start adding a bunch of relays? Or can I add them all?

The more relays, the more data usage, is generally the case.

As Vitor mentions in the guide to setting up relays I sent previously, it's best to keep your outbox and public inbox relays limited to 3 or so, your DM inbox relays limited to 2, and then your General relays set to 5-10.

If you're up to it, you can run an Outbox Feed Relay as one of the few relays you read from. It will pull in notes from those you follow, regardless of what relays they are posting to. Very handy to not have a ton of relays you are reading from.

You can also run your own Haven relay, which you can set up to broadcast your notes to other relays for you.

These are not beginner-friendly things to do. Would love to see them made easier to install and set up. Takes some command line and some knowledge about how to set up a reverse proxy, and you have to own a domain.

I've discovered that if youโ€™re on a client that has essentially downloaded all of Nostr (there are.a few) then that client will find all notes related to you regardless of what your Outbox relays are set as.

Mainly #Primal ๐Ÿ˜‚

What others are running a massive cache relay like that?

Ditto as well it appears, and Ditto loads by far the fastest of any client for me over here in Southeast Asia. Not quite sure how Nostr scales if every client is running the infra to support an internal "all-of-Twitter" firehose, but on the other hand Ditto's backend can serve a lot of communities at once so that's a potential efficiency gain there. And the Nostr web is a lot easier to index than the world wide one.

Plus I could see nostr.wine or nostr.band putting out some kind of Nostr-firehouse-as-a-service offering for clients willing to go the rental route. Feels like things are going that direction. Though I do like using the relay-centric clients for that hands-on feel.

nevent1qvzqqqqqqypzqprpljlvcnpnw3pejvkkhrc3y6wvmd7vjuad0fg2ud3dky66gaxaqydhwumn8ghj7emvv4shxmmwv96x7u3wv3jhvtmjv4kxz7gqyrkj7ne3cmxs5yxzqlexg335ddgrukn9nea20egxpgns90k56r7zk56efyy

Well, that's interesting. I noticed Ditto was faster for me too (in the US), and I was immediately attracted to the UI. It's working for me so far more than the other desktop clients, so I'm sticking with it for now, along with Coracle.

Yeah, very nice UI, I think it took shape some years before Nostr over on Mastodon. Check out gleasonator.dev or henhouse.social for the same UI deployed by a specific community.

I'll check it out ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

I can't figure out how to post to a community though! You join the community and then what? (I tried composing posts in the community UI, no luck, and my in-community replies seem to vanish). Lemme know if you figure it out!

I think if you sign up on ditto you become part of the community posts, there is a tab called Ditto and that's where you will find all the current ditto users are. The home tab is for all your followers and following

There seems to be some mechanism whereby you can aim a post at either (a) the community plus the wilds of Nostr, or (b) just at the wilds of Nostr. And only those posts aimed at both will show in the community feed.

Well, that;s fucked up

I triedโ€”I'm sure he's a busy guy. How is it your posts are showing on gleasonator.dev?

I'm not sure I understand your question. Are you asking how my posts show up as "from gleasonator.dev" on other Nostr sites? Or are you just asking how posts display from my POV on Gleasonator?

Sort of the other way around. What I mean is can I expect every new note that you (Sprate) post on Nostr, regardless of what client you use, to show up for me here under the gleasonator.dev tab? As long as both of us are members of gleasonator.dev? Or is there some way you make it known to gleasonator.dev that you'd like a particular note to be highlighted for the community there? (New note, not a reply.)

Just using gleasonator.dev as an example to get at how communities work in general on ditto.

That's how it works if you both are on gleasonator.dev together you both will see all posts from all who are on the community tab. If you follow the same relays or profiles, yes you both will be on the same timeline

I'm not seeing my own posts under the gleasonator.dev tab (new posts). Or maybe posts are visible to other members but not you yourself?

Can you help me with a check, are you seeing my posts under that gleasonator.dev tab (without diving into threads)?

Ahh, gotcha.

I believe that that tab is only for posts made specifically THROUGH Gleasonator. If I were to go login on Primal using the same key and make a post, I don't believe it would show up on that tab.

Ditto, the frontend software that Gleasonator uses, is based off of Alex's Fediverse frontend Soapbox, which had functionality to show all the posts made by users on the instance you were posting from. I'm pretty sure the gleasonator.dev tab at the top of the site is just that.

Ah thanks, that makes sense. I see Soapbox was first built in a Mastodon context, but since Nostr does not have instances like Mastodon does I'm trying to figure out what Ditto considers an "instance" in a Nostr context.

How exactly do you make a post THROUGH gleasonator.dev? I've tried composing posts when inside gleasonator.dev, but those posts don't show up for me under the gleasonator.dev tab (just the HOME tab). Maybe they show for others under the gleasonator tab but not me? Or maybe there is moderation that keeps them out?

Your posts and replies all show there though. Somehow you're a first-class citizen there!

You may have to follow yourself llok

Lol. I'm following you now but your posts and replies aren't showing there like Sprate's are. Are you a member of gleasonator.dev?

No I'm on primal

Can you try going to gleasonator.dev and replying from there?

I can see if I can log in with my nsec

Logged in

Nope, not seeing your replay in Home or Gleasonator tab (as a top-level post).

I suspect now that the gleasonator.dev tab is for the team at gleasonator. dev only. I thought that "gleasonator.dev" tab was for the forum itself, and "Home" was for all of Nostr. But now I suspect Home is actually for the forum itself (it just looks like all of Nostr to me because so many people I know are members of gleasonator.dev.)

Either way not seeing your post yet.

Or could it be that the gleasonator.dev tab is for the team at gleasonator. dev only? I thought that "gleasonator.dev" tab was for the forum itself, and "Home" was for all of Nostr. But now I suspect Home is actually for the forum itself (it just looks like all of Nostr because so many people I know are members of gleasonator.dev.

you have to get a registered name for your posts to show up there. I run ditto on poster.place, free nip05 names. Become part of our community. Cleaner Global Timeline than other ditto instances

Ah ha. Maybe you can solve the mystery. There seem to be 3 feeds in a Ditto implementation, in your case that's HOME and POSTER.PLACE and GLOBAL TIMELINE.

Which feed shows what and to who in what state?

Global is Nostr-wide, everything at once

Poster.place - Whoever is registered there with a poster.place nip05 name.

I personally only use global. you see everything on nostr and don't miss anything.

Home is your followings

Thanks but still a little confused. In oder to "join" a Ditto community I'd need to give up my current nip05? That seems like quite an ask to join a community, and how would one join multiple communities?

I'm guessing I'm missing something simple here.

Your global timeline spam filtering is useful. Are you running poster.place entirely on your own infra? Or are you calling ditto's backend for things?

Those two sites look really nice. I didn't know that they have a women's only Nostr Community

This has been the BEST advice I received so far, and I received some very helpful info, and I thank you. I would zap you if I could, lol. I'll work on that next.

It looks like the relays issue may have solved my missing notes problem. I added the popular relays and others you recommended and all of a sudden I have more people seeing my posts and following.

With that said, I think it's incredible that Nostr would expect new users to figure this stuff out. Is there a plan to 1) fix the bugs and 2) make Nostr user-friendly?

I think they are working on a some type of solution

So, that's the rough part about an open and decentralized protocol, right? There's no central vision and no authority to provide one.

Anyone can build anything they want and user experience is therefore very dependent on the developers of each individual client.

We might see some change with what nostr:nprofile1qqsgydql3q4ka27d9wnlrmus4tvkrnc8ftc4h8h5fgyln54gl0a7dgsprpmhxue69uhhqun9d45h2mfwwpexjmtpdshxuet5qy28wumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnyv9kh2uewd9hszrthwden5te0dehhxtnvdakqc267ea is proposing here:

nostr:nevent1qqstxwl0y86ylj4yh39hmtjjfssn8lcamtk4d6nn6lcqzk3pkexne9gpr9mhxue69uhhwmm59e38y6t8dp6xymmvwshxuet59upzpq35r7yzkm4te5460u00jz4djcw0qa90zku7739qn7wj4ralhe4zqvzqqqqqqyv9737r

More cooperation to improve the protocol and applications built around it would be welcomed, for sure.

I'm a but of a weirdo in that I enjoy trying out new and unrefined technologies, and particularly those that look promising for improving freedom. Yet, I know that most folks aren't like me. They want the freedom, but they also want a good experience.

To some extent freedom will always come with more responsibility than what folks are used to, but good design and sensible defaults can also help with the learning curve immensely.

Like I always say, I'm willing to suffer through the 9 circles of hell for a truly decentralized protocol. I end up getting shadowbanned - never banned which would have been a mercy - everywhere I go. But I have to say that Nostr is challenging even that, LOL. I'm sure that having tech skills makes it easier, and the community seems kind and willing to help which could offset any screams of frustration.

we'll be here to help as long as you need ๐Ÿค™

have you tried yakihonne? its been best experience for me, and has excellent desktop, android and iphone client.

https://github.com/YakiHonne/yakihonne-mobile-app

My zap wallet won't work at yaki....any idea?

Seconded, nostr:npub1yzvxlwp7wawed5vgefwfmugvumtp8c8t0etk3g8sky4n0ndvyxesnxrf8q is an excellent client, and the developers are very friendly and open to feedback.

I'll have to ask them why coinos not working there.

as far as we know coinos works properly using the nwc connection string, can we know exactly what happened to you ? (from yakihonne)

When zap a dialogue box pops up and says waiting but never goes through. Everything else works great. I'll try again tonight and let you know here if works now.

Sometimes, the network relay takes sometime to respond thats why it golds howegee u can double check it could be passed normally.

I can zap myself to test on other clients but not at YakiHonne? Zap button is shaded out, is that correct? I zapped you and went through, can you please zap me small amount to test?

sure yes, we disabled zapping for self accounts ๐Ÿ™

Great, thank you for letting me know. All working great!

Zapped ๐Ÿซก

I tried it but my zap wallet doesn't work there. I'll just stick with noStrudel, Coracle works okay too but overall noStrudel for me.

It's better this way...

Which relay was the issue Violet?

I have no idea. I just added a bunch of relays, massive data usage be damned, lol.

Lol ๐Ÿ˜‚ so do you see more of the notes you are missing?

Excellent question. My previous missing posts are STILL MISSING.

But so far, after adding all of the relays and their mother... my published notes are showing up.

Oh my that's great news ๐Ÿ˜ for the new notes. That's a bummer about the old notes though

No, it's better this way.
