Just be careful to let nostr also grow organically.
decentralization is hard, when everyone maintains their own vision, while being a sovereign developer. this is exciting. let me know how i can help with onboarding, education, growth, etc.

finally someone understands that multiple clients need to win for Nostr to succeed, not just one. At first glance, this effort might seem like it would dilute the competitive advantage of the winning client, but the reality is quite the opposite. If top clients align with a broader ecosystem vision instead of competing in isolation, they gain access to shared resources, interoperability, and def. a larger user base.

i will help with creators & artists.
You should for example choose just two or three twitter kind nostr clients that have a chance to be widespread adopted and focus on these clients to make them great, with funds and development resources.
thats the complete opposite of what nostr users want. we need more clients, more relays and for users to be spread on as many relays and clients as possible. otherwise whats the point of using nostr? we want decentralization, not a new X or Bluesky!
Nostr have 3 years, what good client do you see? I see no one.
All clients have a lot of bugs, are ugly, miss a lot of features.
All people that I know complain about the apps not working as expected.
We can have a lot of clients, I don't care, but we need at least one great client that is able to compete with big tech ones in features, UI, no bugs...
there might not be a big array of efficient clients rn but as the nostr space gets bigger and bigger we have:
- more developers (we already have more of them than big tech companies do)
- innovative features and ideas
and a bright future ahead. a lot has improved in 3 years, nostr will do its thing as long as we work towards client and relay diversity. lets give people a lot to choose from, users should be able to make choices. #nostrfreewill
I intend to implement my applications in this direction in case you're looking for random brazilians to throw your money at.
I'm building a core to avoid rewrite configs/relays manage, I'm using angular and tauri (ts + rust) to make it for web, desktop and mobile.
The problem is that there are many nostr developers that should just work for others that understand how to create a good product, instead of trying to create their own clients. Today what we see is many ugly, bug and missing nostr clients.
GFY I still use w3 or lynx sometimes.
"Ugly" - what's that for argument?
I use FVM2 as Desktop environment.
It's over the top highly configurable, users are really productive by using it.
You sound like Microsoft when Linux hit the planet.
"Too ugly" wtf
Not everybody wants to be distracted by nice candy-like buttons or use a client that mimics centraliced social media apps.
Maybe there are users out there, that prefer the look&feel of plan9?
Also, as a Bitcoiner, I want my clients streamlined with minimal attack surface.
No fancy shit, just a marketplace that works and is safe, preferably without bells and whistles.
So you want Nostr to be used by few people, like is today.
I don't care. Linux was also used by few people.
We already have twitter clones, we have Instagram clones and so on.
Read what Jack wrote -- we now need marketplaces and other stuff to free people from gouvernment and corporate enslavement.
You don't care but many people care.
Why are the many people not on nostr then?
Damus and Amethyst f.e. are good enough to attract people.
They are not here, because they don't want to loose their followers, their bubble is still on X.
Independent Bitcoiners ARE here, now lets do anonymous web3 with BTC commerce.
This are real usecases, because they are unique like silkroad was.
The succes will draw people here.
The only other thing bringing people to NOSTR is censorship.
So we can "hope" there will be lots of censorship to bring people here -- or we build usecases UNIQUE to nostr, successfull business posdibilities.
Remember ebay when it was cool?
Damus and Amethyst are far away of being good clients.
We need to tell the truth about nostr clients that have no chance of widespread adoption, and suggest these developers to work for people that knows about how to create a good client, instead of them try to create their own client.
thanks jack!! seeing the Nostr ecosystem grow out of the Bitcoin community will be nice (Iβm not into Bitcoin, but the advantages of using something like Nostr.)
I can help with relays
I still think you should create your own client
not a good idea. then nobody use other clients and it become hard for other developers and teams to succeed on nostr...
But the code will be opened. If no Nostr good clients be developed, nostr will not succeed.
Today what we see is many developers trying to make nostr clients, but these developers don't know how to do this. They would be better working for projects that knows how to develop good products for the masses.
that's good to have big teams working on good clients. but a lot of people know jack. that's a kind of hype which make everyone to just use that clients because of jack. that's a little hard to explain. π΅βπ«
One good client of each category, will always win. The important thing is having alternatives if something goes wrong.
You can't compete with big techs apps with bug and ugly clients.
i dont get the difference from legacy social media then, most people see theres something wrong but decide to remain on those platforms, the exact same thing could happen with popular clients. there is a clear need of expansion and diversity within the #nostr space
and i personally think that could be achieved if we market and talk about nostr a lot more and also create innovative features. only then people would be interested bc its not some sort of remade social media but a whole new different thing.
Big teams must rely on advertising for powerful companies.. we will end up full circle.
In that case, what they need is research and discovery grants..
It's gonna be a messy ammass of clients much like Linux distros
and then hand it to elon cusk? Nah.. Grant builders that want freedom, not self interest.
we are planning to develop specific relays for groups and communities on dezh. beside our general relay called immortal which helps public relays to scale easily and give a good experience to new users.
π
Thereβs something good here. Itβs early in its infancy and needs guidance. I think this will help.
our modern day Batman π¦
Excellent! I think a degree of unification is needed right now. Been trying out a number of clients with a test npub and the end result has actually been (to varying degrees) lost messages, lost bookmarks, lost followers, some clients borrowing storage urls from others (for things like profile pics and banners), dropped relays, NWC yes/no, caching relays, lost notes, clients accessing / storing on iCloud / Gdrive without clear notification stated permission etc.
I've been thinking about communities on nostr (and off) for a long time. You know where to find me if you want my input. Also give flotilla.social a look if you haven't already.

In terms of adjacent technologies, I'd love to see the rss guys get some love. Their podcast 2.0 initiatives have integrated zaps and value splits which allowed them to expand to the music industry (ripe for disruption).
Their world has been colliding with nostr.
Rss as the music distribution layer while nostr as the social discovery layer. All of it coming from a self-sovereign pov, putting power back in the hands of individual artists. Coming from someone in the traditional the music industry, this is a very significant shift. Potential for disruption as large as napster was back in the day.
There is a huge contingency of npubs leading this charge. A few major players tagged here:

#V4V #PC20
It seems to me like this is a bigger development push to make things more integrated and interoperable. Podcast 2.0 is incredible and a seismic shift but i think with Jack's weight behind it, a closer more seamless integration with nostr and money for UX development would make it easier to onboard artists and fans, fostering a wider and deeper connected community. In turn this would move it from a niche product in our corner of the internet, to the masses. Not just trying to keep the lights on, I want to see this whole thing level up.
don't they still rely on key send or no?
By and large, yes. Itβs the best tool for automatic payments; ie send 1 sat per minute while listening to the podcast, aka streaming. Also the most efficient way to send payments to multiple wallets. However, weβve been recently shifting to lnaddress, and the players are slowly shifting to work with either keysend or less efficiently with lnaddress
I think so. But from a non techie perspective, I've got to imagine with some funding they could figure out bolt 12 integration or some other methodology that is more seamless.
Weβve been waiting for Bolt 12 with bated breath.
we have been talking about Bolt12 for the last 4 years
I don't know the technical hurdles on the rss side but I'm seeing it integrated in a lot of the latest lightning applications. Ocean pool and coinos to name a few.
No technical hurdles, just a lack of major support. Good to see things moving in the direction of Bolt12.
Yep we just need something that works for what we are doing. Right now that is Alby since we have been working with them this whole time and they see the vision.
Coinos.io makes it extremely easy to spin up a wallet for valuesplits. It's custodial but that's the tradeoff. It does have a function though that allows automatic withdraws to another wallet (say a self custody non bolt 12 wallet) after your balance reaches x threshold. Could be a very viable workflow that makes onboarding a lot easier but we need bolt12 support in the splitkit or whatever is being used on the back end on rss side.
The apps have been looking into NWC. If you have an Alby account you can go to getalby.com/node and connect a NWC wallet to Alby and use your Alby account like you always have.
Coinos supports NWC but the keysend part is still buggy so it wont send a Boost from an app like Castamatic.
YakiHonne has a NWC wallet that does support keysend so if you spin one up and connect it then it all works.
We still want to use Alby but need an easy funding source for new listeners to send sats with. Us diehards have our own nodes for that but that doesn't work for most people. Right now we just tell everyone to switch to Fountain which is great but that's a lot of eggs in one basket.
I donβt know enough about Cashu to know if it could work for our purposes. Lots to look into.
I don't either. All of this ecash and cashu stuff I cant tell whats real or VC BS.
Most people are comfortable with custodial solutions. PC2.0 was no different. Until Alby changed their model, we all used their custodial wallet. I just want an easy wallet that I can easily move sats in and out and easily attach to any app. And sending payments is seamless.
Iβd do some development for nostr, but integrating and respecting the splits is so fundamental to my vision that Iβve pulled back. I know thereβs clients doing it, but the UX is less than ideal.
Iβm hoping NWC allows me to move processing payments to a server so I donβt have to spend so many resources client side handling multiple Bolt 11 invoices.
bolt 12 zaps would be amazing
Yup. Many of the existing clients are awesome and could do all the things we want, they just lack the resources to pull off their vision.
I also thought if you released your own client, everyone would want to switch to yours because of your reputation and ability to self-fund with all the bells and whistles everyone wants. It has the potential to fuck with the decentralizing goal.
Then there are all the smaller projects and unknown devs who are building incredible apps at a complete loss (financially and time) due to a labor of love and a general desire to contribute to open-source and decentralized environments.
Opensats is great, but I think multiple sources of funding is what nostr is really missing.
Thank you for your service and I look forward to seeing what you release.

True, different people different approaches and different goals. VCs are good at accelerating things that work, so there is probably room for symbiosis between them and creative npubs..
Yet another #SovEng shill for those who didn't get the memo yet:
Cline+Nestr > Cursor+GitHub
have many thoughts on this and have been diacussing it endlessly foe thw past year how to unlock decentralized commerce and compute.
i also believe that grants might be the wrong approach for it, you want something along the lines of small business loans, at least partially. grants lead to proof of concepts and lack market feedback while something similar to small business loans or basically seed capital without venture path might make a lot of difference.
bitcoin/nostr has tons of potential for small cash flow producing projects that do actual commerce but get too often either snowballed into something that is venture capital scale and then fail when they figure out that the market for it doesnt justify the size (or is 15years away)
grants on the other hand attract a lot of development of things that are engineeringly interesting but commercially completely unviable.
my point being is we want to incentivize people to build businesses not proof of concepts nostr:npub1sg6plzptd64u62a878hep2kev88swjh3tw00gjsfl8f237lmu63q0uf63m

Let me know specifically and weβll fix itβ¦ there are perpetual improvements being pushed everyday
There are lots of ux/usability improvements in the works/still to be implemented. Trust.
That's so cool and generous! Can't wait to see the progress that will come out of this...
the nostr Vine (π) sprouting leaves
Devs on my team having been working for free for too long. I feel bad. It just isnβt right. Theyβre getting their bounty cuts but man, after Latvia things were supposed to change. Iβd love to hire one or two more UI devs. Help us, jack. Help us finish this git sanctuary. note1fxq6xm0magrrct0y4c3j32jh49cxmyaged3kh76l43tpg2pnc5aqgex2gr
this is finally coming together. one more conversation and we go.

allow us freedom and choice.
no illusions of it.
Nice, what about creating more simplex clients?
Because simplex is just telegram from ten years ago. NOSTR private messages are far more secure beyond doubt than whatever simplex is promissing.
Don't be fooled again, telegram was enough.
Telegram is not foss and i can't helfhost it. But if nostr pm will be private that's great.
Here you go: https://www.0xchat.com
From now forward, use that.
wut?
SimpleX is nothing like telegram. ten years ago or now.
That is like saying that canned tuna isn't the same as canned cod fish.
You are technically right and yet you are still missing the point.
It is just like telegram 10 years ago:
- Open-source
- Russian-owned and developed
- VC funded
- Staggering privacy promises
- realistically only 1 client implemented
- free servers from VC funding
That isn't private. There is zero reliable guarantee that their app won't be sending clear texts messages to some gov when your IP is deemed as "interesting".
Contrast that to PGP-alike NOSTR with hundreds of volunteer servers and dozens of client implementations where you can even send messages by paper if needed.
By all means, please do convince anyone here to place hopes on that telegram 2.0
ok so,
you cant host your own telegram servers.
and you dont have any privacy guarantees from them if you use theirs.
SimpleX cant read your messages,
by design.
even if you're using their infrastructure.
telegram can.
and you can always run your own Simplex relays.
SimpleX messages are always encrypted.
Telegram has option encryption in a closed source context.
these are big differences.
but sure i guess, don't use it because Russian people.
But muh Russia, Russia bad! Even if the Russians know the importance of privacy due to their country egregiously violating it!
What do you think VC money is provided for? Humanitarian reasons?
It is a business, care to guess who is the product?
Those who choose to self-host, thus increasing decentralization and censorship resilience while also ethically benefiting from establishing reliable private communication.
Read from the source, and not federal agents and/or privacy LARP'ers who'll heap praise on fucking Signal and Session as if THOSE aren't compromised.
https://github.com/simplex-chat/simplex-chat/blob/stable/docs/rfcs/2024-04-26-commercial-model.md
You do realize that on that page they are literally inspiring themselves on Signal and "improving" the business model? π
Oh well. You will eventually get it after a few more years of promises. Enjoy the carrots! π
Enjoy being confidently retarded, no use in wasting my time trying to appeal to someone proud of being wrong.
Oh dear god. Still missing the point.
You are not compiling yourself the client and just blindly install binaries onto your personal phone
You *can* host a server but realistically you don't, nor do 99.99% of the users.
Yes, it is an improved mouse trap despite the very obvious red flags everywhere.
Congratulations, and enjoy the cheese!
no dude
your "point" is Russian dev bad and muh VC monies.
nobody compiles the app themselves, that threat isn't different on nostr either.
the security models of SimpleX and telegram (if telegram could be said to have a security model) are completely different.
so what, you're worried they're going to distribute a malicious build.
why is Simplex a bigger risk for that than anything else?
Please stop. You don't know what you're talking about. nostr private messages are not synced by any central server. The protocol doesn't lend itself to having very reliable Private messages. For privacy, on nostr, there are a few ways to DM and not all clients use the private way. If they don't, it's terrible for privacy. If they do, well you better hope it's battle tested and that your recipient is using a client that supports it, and if it does you better hope it's programmed well enough to reply in kind instead of insecurely.
lol, gov shill jumping out of the cave.
NOSTR functions on the same principle as PGP. The privacy of these messages is beyond doubt since decades.
Shill harder π
Bro... You're embarrassing yourself. Nothing about event signatures is encrypting messages. Tell me what nip defines private messaging on nostr and how it achieves it.
Not you ... I knew the answer. He clearly doesn't understand privacy on nostr. It's not a good protocol for reliable private messaging.
And that defines the gift wrapping scheme for nip44 which is used for NIP17 DMs and you better hope any other client involved doesn't switch to nip4 because it doesn't do NIP17. And you have to make sure you're signing the right thing. Oh and let's hope the two people talking are using clients that support outbox too otherwise they'll never see each other's messages unless they happen to be on the same relay. And unless it's a big public relay you have a very small anon set. Finding whose messaging on a private relay is easy (no you can't see what or who is messaging but you know the user base of your relay by their kind0s)
Do you see my point? I know the protocol pretty well. I'm not expert but there are better solutions to private messaging right now.
I was just answering your question for informational purposes, nothings perfect
Nice, looking forward to seeing what comes of this!
Why? We have clear evidence that public/private partnerships are commie, nostr:nprofile1qqsgydql3q4ka27d9wnlrmus4tvkrnc8ftc4h8h5fgyln54gl0a7dgspp4mhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mqpxdmhxue69uhkuamr9ec8y6tdv9kzumn9wshkz7tkdfkx26tvd4urqctvxa4ryur3wsergut9vsch5dmp8pese6nj96. Can you give examples of what you mean? Maybe I missing something.

Coupd be a very interesting fit!
That's an incredible initiativeβfostering collaboration across Nostr clients and technologies will definitely drive meaningful innovation. Can't wait to see how this vision unfolds. Keep us posted! π§‘β‘
