A lot of sci fi and fantasy books tell an incomplete story and then go on for tons of books and thousands of pages to complete it.
What if, and hear me out since I know it’s weird, you actually tell a full story in under 400 pages.

It’s not about the completion of the story in as little time as possible. It’s a complete joy to read the intricacies and details of the world that the author has created.
Still waiting to read.
Sometimes though you travel for the journey rather than the destination.
Guess it all depends on how well you tell the story, nice complete well rounded stories can be very satisfying. Other times it is the drive to know more that pulls you only with the story like a fish on a hook.
I prefer single book stories, or at least a completed A Story. There can be B Story stuff left on the shelf for other books, but not a cliffhanger.
Give me a sprawling universe with many individual stories. I don't mind if the writer leaves room for my imagination to complete the story.
Go for it
I think it’s doable! The main point that usually is brought by sci fi and fantasy books that make them grow outside one book is the existence of multiple universes in space and/or time
Its probably because it is easier to get publishing deal for subsequent books once the series is established?
I grok that. Love a great stand-alone…. Which creates a whole new world to play in.
Which books you on about m8?
I’d rather read about fixing the broken money. 🤷🏻♂️
You made me think of P.K. Dick's books. Each one a complete story, after a fashion, but connected by his unique vision of the future and similar themes.
Asimov mastered that
Sci fi in 400 pages sounds like a new sci fi universe
they can’t do that because they don’t have anything worth saying.
when u know what u need to say, you can say it < 400
It’s so true, you get to the end of the book - cliffhanger!
I think fiction writers fall in love with the world they create and a comprehensive ending will means its death, which they can’t accept.
I like long series. When I start one, I don't need to think about what book I'm going to read next 😅
Some stories can’t be told in 400 pages, just like some stories work better as tv series instead of a movie…
Because it takes at least 900
yes pls
High time preference bullshit!! 😉
Movies are great, but for some really good stories, six seasons and a movie is what's best.
not just sci-fi
fantasy Light Novel are even worse xD
like how am i gonna read things like Re;zero where i read 15 volumens and felt scammer cause the thing is 40 volumes long and it keeps on going and going and going
but there some really good long runs like "Ascendance of a Bookworm"
33 volumes long great Fantasy with just magic in medieval setting with the female protagonist introducing printing into this magic world and some romance down the line.
What’s the font size? 💥
Made me think about Stanislaw Lem and Golem XIV.
