Homeschooling needs to turn into a proper movement instead of it just being a parental or household decision bubble that is often misunderstood as isolating a child from society. When in reality it’s a move against a terrible school system.

this sounds like a battle you can win.

1. test and establish working alternatives to all regularly used tech.

2. present a compelling argument to the group as to why using big tech puts the children at a long term disadvantage and exposes them to mass surveillance, manipulation, and teaches them to be dependent on untrustworthy corporations rather that becoming self sufficient.

3. demonstrate that alternatives exist and work.

I see the same with homeschool groups where I live. I grew up homeschooled. We had a very large homeschool group get together at our church once a week and did outings together on occasion. We even had a group that would go on vacations together! No Internet at all...All it takes is one or two people willing to coordinate it all, no Internet needed at all. Technology kills human interaction sadly. My suggestion would to just be the coordinator over forcing others to adopt a new platform. It will require more work though.

If the group has that much administrative overhead, it must be large. Don't try to change the whole group. Instead, find a family or two that also isn't into it (privacy may not even be their reason) and branch off. All you really need is your encrypted messaging tool of choice and a good family to partner with. Keep it simple.

This is the sort of reason I wish we could get a private group thing on nostr, but thats just not how it works I guess.

I'm currently in the process of de-googleization. In a case like yours it would probably make sense to use a google account only for homeschooling since it is the most prevalent platform for 'normies'. Then maybe you can develop a quick start guide to privacy for the co-op or volunteer to teach a class on digital identity management for the kiddos (age dependent). You can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink.

Good post. Very telling what you said about homeschoolers....my kids grew up in a computer environment and you cannot trust Signal and they only use Linux and their own servers to communicate. Teach them Linux and they will take care of you.....

BTW our homeschooling group was created by a 3x5 card pinned up at the public library. It said, "If you want to meet other homeschoolers, meet up at P*** Park at 11:00 am, Thursdays, bring a picnic basket, your kids and I will be sitting off to the side on a red blanket and I have short blond hair." That's all it took for a gradual growing homeschooling group that lasted for years! If you can avoid gossiping women, it could work. Eventually as the kids and group aged, people fell out, picked sides rich vs poor etc, and I gradually left the whole group. But there was lots of fun for at least 7 years. And the kids learned a lot. There were camping trips, parties, A group Boy Scout type group called the "Trackers", soap making, mud fights etc. The ones who grew up best had a moral background like with their church. The free range kids grew up pretty wild. One even embezzled a medical company out of millions and left for Jamaica. But most ended up good citizens, and were smart...smarter than what comes out of High School for sure.
