Fedwire processed over $1 quadrillion in gross settlement volumes in 2022.

There were approximately 196 million transactions, averaging $5.41 million each.

This is an average of 6.2 transactions per second.

Meanwhile any random pleb cpuld easily find ways to send more bitcoin transactions over lightning, and yet they will tell you bitcoin is too slow

Sounds like Bitcoin

If only they had invested into larger spreadsheets they could make Fedwire Cash and process more transactions 🤭

#Bitcoin network can support the tx volume and more.

Less than 7 trx/s?? This will never work 🤡

Bitcoin 7 transactions per second?

Is the raw data timestamped? Anyway to see patterns of usage either at a certain time of day, week or month?

Interesting.

Where is this data from?

I’ve been looking for data on cross-boarder payments, and this source could be helpful!

frbservices.org (a federal reserve site)

Thanks, Lyn!

Pretty sure I just sent you my first zap ⚡️

Is the rate calculated using Mon - Fri (excluding bank holidays) or does Fedwire operate at all hours, every day?

Definitely gross, all that transfer of political debt coins. 🤮

Unbelievable

Funny, that's about the same on-chain transaction capacity that #Bitcoin has 😎

Sorry for asking, but what does it mean #[1]? Is this good, bad, impressive, peanuts? Maybe this is good for bitcoin? 🤷💫

Well for one, it shows how large a settlement system can be despite doing less than 7 transactions per second, thanks to layered architecture.

Fed wire is basically the centralized closed-source version of bitcoin.

Aha, thanks! ⚡1K

Hey Lyn. But fedwire is only US isn't it? Would be interested to know what global settlements might look like in terms of transactions per second and amounts. Prob not too easy to compile that data tho I'm guessing.

Appreciate you!! Take it easy

Any way to estimate the cost per transaction? With overhead of the institutions involved, I’m gonna guess the fees are much higher than on-chain Bitcoin transactions. And way higher than Lightning.

Less than a buck each, last I checked. But it is centralized and the Fed doesn’t need to be profitable from this activity.

Marginal cost of transactions is small, but like you said, government institutions are okay subsidizing the real cost

Interesting. This is what I wanted to ask. Seeing this answer makes me wonder: does fedwire have a fee market or it is first-come-first-served?

So you're saying there's a chance? lol

All serious though puts alot into perspective when we talk about comparing final settlement. If bitcoin does settle sizes like this I wonder if the average person could afford to move a UTXO on chain

Sounds too slow. Will never get mass adoption.

But how many monkey JPEGs does Fedwire process?

Sounds very similar to an open sourced protocol I've read lots about.. 😅😅

Layer 1

Layer 0

But how many JPEGs did fed wire mint last year? 😂

How much did bitcoin do in that time frame?
