I'm not saying that's what happened. In fact I highly doubt it. I just wanted to point out, that there are possible scenarios in which he is not a martyr. However unlikely they might be.

Why? It doesn't matter. He died while working toward an ends. Using his death to further his objectives, if feeling a bit cold, would certainly honor him, as we would further his message.
And it would honor his family by keeping his name alive.
