Grafted 30 apples this spring. Was able to trade scion wood with some plebs to add new varieties to the collection. Got over 50 varieties so far and hoping for the first good fruit set on the oldest trees this year. Growing orchards from bench grafts is definitely low time preference.

So cool.

Explain this to me like im 5

It's tree transplant surgery. Cut a young branch off an apple tree and splice it onto a young seedling apple tree. The seedling tree and the young branch grow together making a clone of the tree the young branch came from.

Ohh fancy!

Correct me if I'm offbase Rev (additional explain):

We graft apples because apples grown from seed are wildly unpredictable.

1 in 10k chance it's good eating, true to type.

1 in 1000 chance it's good enough for cider.

1 in 100 chance it's animal feed or "rootstock"

Sound fair?

Yes, grafting makes certain a desired fruit will be produced. A seedling is definitely uncertain what quality of fruit will produce. As far as the ratios go, I have no idea. There is a wild apple here on the homestead that is tasty enough not the best apple ever but definitely fine for cider or animal feed.

Just blew my mind, now i know why grandpa laughed at me when i said I wanted to grow from seed.

issa merge

Literally merged a branch

Looks really good

Awesome. Plants are so fking weird. You can just chop 'em up, mix and match, and see what happens. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Love seeing the step by step process.

Newly grafted apple trees starting to leaf out!

Grafted 30 apple trees this spring and so far 20 of the 30 are pushing out leaves. The big challenge is keeping them alive through the heat of the summer.

The strawberries in the understory are coming in nicely as well. They help to compete with the grass but not with the apples making for less weeding all while giving us a yeild of strawberries too.
