I'm having trouble understanding and setting up my own Nostr relay.

I'm not a #dev like many of you, so the process of researching takes SOOOO long and it's not straightforward due to all the evolving tech, apps, etc. UGH

I set up my #NostrRelay on my new #Start9 and I'm the only user of that #relay so far, I think. (I want to keep it private and personal in the beginning.)

In #Amethyst I added my relay (I think).

Now, when I post images, they don't display in Snort or Primal.

Do I have to manually "connect" my relay to other relays? Do my followers have to be on my relay to see my posts?

Primal displays a "nostr:nevent1..." URL

Start9 relay is mostly just for your personal use in order to store and backup your data. If you want to allow others to use it you'll need to either reveal y our ip address to the world (which is not very safe for your home network) or buy a domain name i.e. "nameofyourcoice.com" and link that to your ipaddress then share your node over your domain .com address.

or just add another public relay (not yours) to amethyst so your posts are stored in two places

I'm already (automatically) connected to 13 other relays in addition to my own right now, including one that I paid for. Does that mean none of them are storing my data?

some of them are, some of them are not

you can try and reach the relay operators to ask

but it's not a problem for visibility rly, i think most only delete after a certain period.. months i assume

you have your own data backed up w your relay is what counts

shouldn't be a problem for visibility

you should def not upload media with the nip95 verified thing tho, you'll reach only amethysts users with that and there's a lot of damus users here too

My relay requires me to connect via Tor. Is my Tor connection an issue with other relays? Sorry for all the questions -- you don't have to answer.

you can connect to both tor and non-tor relays , use Orbot

I don't want others to use my relay. I only want others to be able to see the images I post.

Try selecting the other options. I believe most of the relays don't support nip 95 yet

Thx. But when choosing that option, it says "nostr.build can modify the file". Is my file still going to be stored on my own relay if I choose this?

quote renoted your question, idk personally but sounds like noh. you only store your notes. If you want to store your own media you should selfhost w jellyfin or that cloud server statting with an N.

But since no other apps are using NIP-95 I can't store my own media on my own relay because if I do, no one on the other apps can see my media. Part of the reason I bought the Start9 server is to host my own Nostr media, but oh well. Perhaps soon there will be a solution.
