If you're into freedom tech and open protocols, do you still use an iPhone? Why?

Because We have a life to live

What does this mean?

Cope

Sounds like cope.

I want to transition away. It feels daunting. The walled garden has high walls šŸ˜….

#GrapheneOS

I used iPhone for years, made the move to #GrapheneOS. It's neat.

We tested zaps on this note… we made five attempts to⚔zap this note, at josh@westernbtc.com, over a period of 12 minutes. In each case, we found that your lightning address server did not respond correctly. (The failure point was when we did a GET request to your specified callback URL: https://westernbtc.com/api/v1/payreq/josh ). Your server did not produce an invoice, thus the zap failed. The error we got was "Valid amount is required". If you wanted to fix this... you could try getting a free Rizful account to reliably receive zaps -- https://rizful.com ... then, pls reply here so we can ⚔zap you some sats to be sure it's working.

bc i paid 1000$ for it (before i even knew about nostr), and im going to use it until it breaks

You can just sell things.

why? it works fine, it’s not in good enough condition to sell, i wont make anything but 50$. dumbass reply

Yea, why sell the thing that locks you into it's ecosystem and spy's on you and undercuts any developer that makes apps for you. It works fine right. Dumbass reply.

You front like you have freedom values but when it's a little inconvenient to gain more freedom, you just give it up willingly.

Doubt you could only get $50 and there's plenty of Android phones out there for $100-200. Cope some more.

bruh idgaf that much. i don’t front freedom values, you obviously don’t know me

🤭🤭🤭 step by step

I don’t like google design choices. That’s the main factor that made me leave Android. I hated that I had to install Graphene on a Google phone because Google is so invasive. Graphene also doesn’t look good, sorry.

But besides the visuals, the thing that keeps me on Apple is the Apple subscription to Apple Arcade and backups (iCloud). I always hated dealing with photo backups on Android. I realize there is a trade off and I’m on with it just due to how I use my phone.

My kids use the Arcade sub and I love that I can easily do parental controls on their devices all from my phone plus no ads in games. This is a huge selling point to families with kids who play games. Maybe Android has something equivalent- I don’t know.

That and I’m used to it now. But if I had to pick one I’d say it’s the shittiness of Android UX. Not that Apple is any better in many ways it’s same or shittier šŸ˜‚

Interesting. I'm quite sensitive to ugly things, and moving from iPhone I thought it would be worse than it actually is. I'm glad I don't have to see the new glass effect šŸ˜…

Can't you get a google phone and run a different operating system on it like calyxOS?

Did you read my note?

Ahh, yes, but not closely enough obviously... I guess strolling through asknostr with toddlers running about can distract me just enough to miss the gist.

No one has a good reason besides sunk costs

This

I don't. Haha. šŸ˜‚

What do you recommend?

I like #GrapheneOS , I moved from iPhone

lol I think about this often. I'm quite a normie. I figure almost everything is captured except the stack I lost in a boating accident.

Lol I want to think not everything is captured! Using Graphene gives me more choice and peace of mind... and it's not that ugly

It took me over a year to finally switch from an iPhone to GrapheneOS. Reminds me of a story I read as a child. A king sat in a warm bathtub for over a year and wouldn't come out because he froze every time he tried. But when a new maid drained the water from the tub, he didn't freeze for long and was happy that he could now do important things. So yes, I mean upgrade. Not in a technical sense, but in terms of quality of life and time saved. Apple and all the ā€œimportantā€ apps are designed to attract attention. I knew that, but I stayed in the ā€œtubā€. When I finally switched, I thought carefully about which app should continue to get my attention. So far, it's worked.

Nice analogy!

If there is one thing apple has got right it’s accessibility. I’m eagerly encouraging people to incorporate this in bitcoin centric apps and platforms. I’d be open to trying out a different phone, but for the upfront cost and adaptations I’d have to put in place are time prohibitive.

That's by design. The longer you wait, the more time prohibitive it will be and the more freedom you are losing out on.

Hmmm, guess I need to find someone with graphene accessibility knowledge.

1. iMessage, I don’t want to make people download signal to contact me

2. Apple Pay, as far as I know you can’t pay with your phone on Graphene

3. I don’t like the pixel devices I’ve tried

I’ve considered an E-Ink phone with LineageOS.

how good is a bath

Because I paid for it and it’s not broken yet šŸ˜…šŸ˜µ
