We think both StartOS and UmbrelOS are usable and reliable. StartOS by default will be more secure and private, offering external access via TOR. But we’ve used both for years with good success and low maintenance.

Any hw recs? The only thing I haven't tried it on is arm based because I don't have any so if it works better on those then I'll have to wait till I can get my hands on one.

Unfortunately housing comes first 😅

I would recommend buying hardware frim nostr:npub126ntw5mnermmj0znhjhgdk8lh2af72sm8qfzq48umdlnhaj9kuns3le9ll for several reasons.

1. If you buy their hardware you get access to exceptional customer support that you won't get with diy

2. Intel Management Engine disabled

3. nostr:npub126ntw5mnermmj0znhjhgdk8lh2af72sm8qfzq48umdlnhaj9kuns3le9ll is imo one of the most important projects in Bitcoin and operate with the highest integrity. I think they deserve the support of plebs.

I kinda have to agree here. I've done the diy thing, and its a great learing experince but everytime ive ended up with unstable HW after 6 months or so.

I'll probably buy a server in the new year.. 👍🏻

Even old guys can do it

They are tempting but that'll have to be a future project.

Right now my goals are to #ReduceReuseRecycle so "buying" anything to achieve something I'm already achieving with a different ecosystem does not align.

A lot of folks have had good success with Dell Optimax 750's, and Dell mini pc's if that helps.
