Hosting videos and images is not just storing them and letting them be there, there are tons of complex acrobatics to ensure that each one is always available and delivered to the requester in the minimum possible amount of time. Very few understand and appreciate all the work behind it, or understand how inexpensive it is for them. If you don’t pay for the product, you are the product. 🐶🐾🫡

I imagine it's like books. If you have a shelf of books, it's pretty fast to just look around and find what you want no matter how is sorted.
If you run a bookstore, then you need to be pretty organized about how the books are organized do you can find the ones you want as fast as possible.
But if you have a huge library, with millions and millions of books, you need to be very sophisticated with how you store and organize them so you don't spend forever looking for the one you want to read.
And you also need to make sure that your book gets into the hands of every person wanting it across the world and 24/7 without any restrictions or hiccups 🐶🐾🫡

I am already working on that, and yes it is tricky. If host doesn’t get paid, it will be forced to monetize on behalf of the user to survive 🐶🐾🫡

Nobody will pay, so I am doing out of my own volition and interest, and on my free time. My experience, if it doesn’t have “bitcoin” word attached to the project, people who have funds to donate do not do so. So, in short, I am determined to do it, with or without the support. 🐶🐾🫡
Do you have any ideas of how this scales for the Nostr community?
I remember back when Netflix was new it was an incredible deal, even back when there was not a whole lot of content (as compared to now).
But overtime, they kept ratcheting up the price per month and the increase in price was not equal to the increase in value (from an individual user’s perspective).
It will not scale or work if it is not paid for or monetized in some way. It is not hugely expensive, but it is definitely not cheap either 🐶🐾🫡

Thank you! I am trying to post any new developments that I am focusing on and implementing, but it is semi regular. Now I am focusing on scaling the data backend and video encoding. Also doing some work that I cannot talk about yet, but should make Nostr a much more fun place and more self contained 🐶🐾🫡🫂

Generally speaking I've seen no shortage of reminders on Nostr that folks need to pay for what they derive value from but most of the advice on how to pay or what exactly you're paying for isn't always clear, especially for us normies.
Satellite.earth CDN has been one of the simplest to understand IMO, partly because the link is right there in the home page of the client.
Service providers, don't be afraid to ask, and don't be reluctant to explain.
Completely agree. Since satellite.earth is also a client, they have an advantage to be able to integrate well. Services like nostr.build that are decentralized from the client and are instead integrated with many clients, are less fortunate in that sense. There is a standard for flexible hosting and integration, but clients (the thing that user will ever see) needs to surface that before it’s obvious 🐶🐾🫡
