I suddenly realized that there doesn’t really seem to be a Nostr browser extension that’s suitable for beginners.

Alby is what I use day to day, but it’s not very beginner-friendly, it requires email sign-up and is mainly a Lightning wallet. It doesn’t feel like a great recommendation for people who just want to try out Nostr.

Nos2x isn’t particularly user-friendly either, it feels more like a developer tool.

If you are on Mac (Apple Silicon) or iOS, try https://apps.apple.com/us/app/nostr-build-shack/id6752591477 - I think it’s a little friendlier, but I am biased sine I coded it 😂

It looks like the permission controls are very thoughtfully designed. I’ll give it a try on my phone! It would be even better if the NIP-07–related functionality could be separated out and made cross-platform.

Due to a very minimal demand, I’ve decided to not do that, and keep things as is. Multiplatform is also not possible, due to the lack of the way to communicate with the native secure code on other platforms/browsers from the extension. The whole point of me doing it was to keep my keys secure and inaccessible from the browser. All other extensions that I am aware of, give control to the browser

Totally understand

This one works like a charm on iOS I can confirm 👏👏

Nostr is amazing but if the lowest common denominator doesn't even know how to manage his browser extensions, most will never even try nostr.

Couldn’t agree more.

Hey nostr:npub1syjmjy0dp62dhccq3g97fr87tngvpvzey08llyt6ul58m2zqpzps9wf6wl any reason why jumble doesn't have the emoji feature or that refresh button on linux browsers?

On touch-enabled devices, I hide the refresh button and emoji picker. The emoji picker is hidden due to some unresolved bugs.

If your device doesn’t support touch, then my detection logic is probably wrong.

Yeah it’s touch. If I disable touch then it’ll work?

You can give it a try. I’m detecting touch support by checking whether `window.ontouchstart` exists, so I’m not sure if that property will still be present after you disable touch.

Also, on touch devices you can refresh by pulling down.

I don’t like using the touch lol I wish it didn’t have it at all

The Flamingo chrome extension was nice for that. I used it for a long time, but it slowly stopped working as clients progressed.

I just tried it, but it doesn’t respond to my signing requests 😌

And it also hands out my pubkey to clients without my consent.

Not a fan of keys.band?

It’s very easy to get started with and nicely minimal. The downside is that it’s too simple, it doesn’t even show you the content of the event you’re about to sign.

nostr:npub1getal6ykt05fsz5nqu4uld09nfj3y3qxmv8crys4aeut53unfvlqr80nfm is payed-subscription-only by now, isn’t it?

Not sure, I haven’t used any of their paid features.

Alby has a freemium offering. You can use the wallet for free without a subscription or if you prefer more services with a subscription.

Install the Alby Extension, connect an Alby Account to get started. There is no need to configure a lightning wallet. You can't receive zaps though. But signing into Nostr apps works perfectly like this.

Got it, so far, Alby still feels like the best option for me as well.

There's a school of thought that says if your website needs a chrome extension at all then as far as beginner users go you've already lost.
